am putting together a home theater system complete with new receiver (Rotel RSX-1067), speakers (Speakercraft AIM8 Fives), wiring, amps, subwoofer (Definitive Technology Supercube Reference), and big screen television (65" Diamond Mitsubishi). I am purchasing this from a specialty audio & video store. A question the guy at the store asked me was "do you need a new DVD Player". He told me about this one (Marantz DV6500 Progressive Scan Universal DVD Player | $649.00). He told me there is a big difference in picture quality using this DVD Player. I was like WHAT? $649.00. WOW. I thought DVD players where cheap. I have a DVD Player that I purchased from Best Buy about a year ago. IT's a Toshiba SD-3800 Progressive Scan. I think I paid like $179.00 for it. And I thought I was paying alot when there are DVD Players for $69 bucks out there.
So my question to everyone is. Anyone know anything about DVD Players?
Will I see a difference watching a DVD in picture quality? Is this worth it?
Thanks, Steve Mazer

Great question and great new topic. I would think those with a standard crt tv would be better served upgrading their tv to a new 32 or 37 inch lcd with a standard dvd player and an hdtv receiver. If you already have a plasma or lcd set, and have the hdtv receiver, then you can spoil yourself with a better dvd player. You should experience progressive scan dvd first if your set accepts it. If you like the improvement in quality over standard dvd, then you may appreciate the upgrade to a top quality dvd player. You will notice a slight difference in audio quality in a better dvd player. I don't see the value in spending an extra $500 in a dvd player because I am totally satisfied with the sound and video quality of current dts dvds, but I haven't invested in all the upgrades in plasma and hdtv yet either. Keep the posts coming!

Not the right time for a new DVD player.

First, I hear (haven't shopped myself) that the new breed of high end DVD players upsample to 1080i. Does this give you a better picture? Don't know, it could. Depends on the quality of the hardware. Probably Denon does a pretty good job.

Second, by year end we're going to start seeing Blu-Ray/HD DVD players come out. If the industry can get it's act together so there is some software then these will blow away any current DVD players.

I've got the itch too but I'm waiting to see how this hi-def thing shakes out.
