Need help with audio change for TV.

Wife purchased a huge wall unit that will take up the entire wall and will not allow for my big towers and center channel in the living room. It's OK since I am moving all that to the den where I will have one audio and video movie room. With that said, I need a little help.
I need to either add bookshelves to the TV or a sound bar. Which is the best route to take. The speaker on the TV is no good and I will still sometimes watch movies on Demand and need a half way decent audio set up. Want to keep the budget from 4-700 dollars. Amy suggestions??

I thought about powered speakers. I wasn't sure how to wire these from TV to speaker? I think the TV just has one red/white output for sound. I may be wrong. It's a Panasonic Plasma.

These have unbalanced (aka RCA) inputs, so connectivity is trivial...
Red plug is usually for right speaker , white/black is the other one :)

Is the analog output from the TV fixed or variable?
