Need help with Amplifier, Speakers and Subwoofer please.

Hey Guys.

So I have a set of JVC SP-E11 (Old) Speakers. These are typical speakers with each speaker having a + and - cable which i plug into my amplifier.

My amplifier is an Lepai LP-838:

When i use my speakers with it, it works fine.

But.... I have recently bought a subwoofer which as a L and R connector on the back: The subwoofer is a Vibe Optisound TV5D Digital TV Subwoofer.

If you look at the amplifier it has a separate connection for the subwoofer which is + and - and doesn't have two separate L and R connections. I have used a cable from the L and R going into the + and - but the sub doesn't work and just produces a soft humming noise. So i was asking how do i connect my amplifier to my subwoofer?. Thanks.

What do you mean receiver?
The subwoofer works fine when I plug it in to my phone using a MP3 3.5mm to L and R adapter

He does not have a receiver, he has the Lepai amplifier.

How can i connect my subwoofer with a L and R cable. I think they are called AV/RCA cables to the + and - ports on my amplifier. Do i need an adapter? Do i need a different subwoofer? I am very tight on budget by the way so would be best to avoid buying anything.

The Vibe Optisound TV5D is not compatible with your Lepai. I would not attempt to connect it to the Lepai again as it may result in damage to the Vibe Optisound TV5D. The subwoofer output on the Lepai is speaker level output and the input in the Vibe Optisound TV5D is line level. The output from the Lepai could damage to input circuitry on the Vibe Optisound TV5D.

You need a passive subwoofer or an active subwoofer with speaker level (high level) inputs. Your cheapest option is to find an 8 ohm passive subwoofer or "woofer".
