Hey folks,

I am just finishing the construction of my new basement and now its getting to the fun part.

I'm looking for a good 5.1 system. Reasonable budget. Usage will be for primarily movies on a plasma and potentially a WII system.

I think I'm looking for:
- upconverter receiver, as the only thing running to my plasma is HMDI.
- ability for subwoofer to be connected via traditional speaker wire.. (as made mistake and thats whats running thru the wall)

I really like the look of: g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/electronics/detail-page/takefpslifestyle.jpg

thus I have so far looked at:
amazon.com/Energy-Take-Speaker-Single-Black/dp/B000VQV0A2/
for the fronts and centers.

As far as the receiver, any 5.1 with regular speaker wire to the subwoofer that you know of.

Let me know your thoughts on receiver and speakers.. Recommendation on models would be great.

Thanks!

Hi there welcome. What is your total budget sans TV? It would be helpful to know so we can help you decide on the best course for your HT.

Thanks Jaime. In terms of budget, I'm hoping to staying south of 2K... maybe even around 1.5K if I can. With the Energy speakers I've already looked at, 3 of those and some satelittes will eat approx 1K. I'm of course open to any other speakers that will do the job. Again, movies, WII, and music.

Also a recommendation on subwoofer would be great too.

Hope that gives you soemthing to work with. Thanks again!

HT speakers

I would look for a a quality bookshelf speaker system for your dedicated room. Small bookshelf or satelite speakers will limit the performance of your system. Check out the SVS 5.1 systems for $1-1.2k. They come with a great sub and quality speakers.

Check out the Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, and Pioneer receiver in the $4-600 price range w/ the features you need.

If you have any money left over, consider building some acuosic pannels or other room treatments.

I like the Yamaha VX-663 for a AVR unit......the SVS and the Yammie will run you under 2000 with a great sub included....:D

Thanks jamie and jc,

I continue to look around the forum and research and research. My wife thinks I'm nuts with that aspect with everything.

Can you tell regarding the QUALITY for the PRICE, is there a huge difference with the SVS system jamie recommended to the Energy speakers I mentioned on Amazon (amazon.com/Energy-Take-Speaker-Single-Black/dp/B000VQV0A2/)

With the Energy speakers, I would also likely go with the either:
- Klipsch Synergy SUB-10 Subwoofer
- Klipsch Synergy SUB-12 Subwoofer

Reason for the question above is I really like the look of the Energy's and they will be surrounding a 58" plasma.

Also, read into 5.1 and 7.1 systems. I'm thinking the Yamaha VX-663 for the upconvert to HMDI. My room is 15 by 35, so I'm wondering if the additional 2 satelittes would be nice to have. Bad news is, no speaker wire currently to those 7.1 add-ons.. so is there wireless options for those extra two speakers should I want a 7.1 system.

TV
15 feet back
Movies seats
5.1 satelittes
another 10 feet back
exercise equipment
another 5 feet back.
potential 7.1 sat speakers???????

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
