so i built a sub woofer box with two 12" subs with their own wires. i found a receiver box in my basement and decided to hook it up. i **** rigged all the wires to jack into the sub woofer output jacks but the problem is i need a powered sub woofer for it to work like it should. How do i turn my sub woofer box into an independently powered sub woofer box?

The short answer is add something like this:

However, the correct answer involves determining impedance and wattage requirements.

From reading your post I'm guessing you had some parts laying around and decided to throw them in a box to see what happens. That's cool and fun, but don't expect good results. Design is required, but there is always room for dumb luck, you might get something that you enjoy.

In the spirit of your project, I'd suggest you see if you can find an inexpensive old used amp or receiver which puts out some decent power (Good Will often has some stuff). You can route the sub output into the input (not the phono input) on any receiver or amp and then feed the speaker output to the sub.
