NEED HELP w/Onkyo Shutoff Issue

I recently got around to hanging/hooking up my rear speakers for surround on my Onkyo 604. However, after about 5-10 minutes with the volume up on multichannel, there is a loud pop and the receiver shuts off.

At first I thought maybe I had it up to loud. However, even after turning the volume all the way down it still pops and shuts off. I checked the +/- hookups to make sure I didnt have the wires crossed. I didnt.

The only fix I found was to unhook one of the rears at the receiver (leaving the other hooked up).

I would replace the cables but I'd have to redrill and fish them through the wall AGAIN and run them back through attic. Cables from the same spool (bluejeanscables) work fine so I doubt that is the problem.

Has anyone had a similar issue or know of a possible solution?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it a particular rear terminal that is doing it, or is it both? I had an issue with my Onkyo where the front right terminal would activate the amp protection circuit whenever anything was hooked up to it. I eventually had to have it repaired.

By any chance, do you have the impedance setting in the receiver's setup for a higher setting than your speakers? Perhaps if your speakers are 4 ohm and the receiver's setting is for 8 ohm the amplifier will be unhappy?

I have never messed with my Onkyo's ohm setting which I assume is 8, which is also the normal impedance of my Klipsch KSP-S6 rears. I'm not even sure how to adjust the ohm setting on the Onkyo but I will check.

Do you have an Ohm meter ?

Back right.

If you have an ohm meter check the resistance on your back right wiring that connects into your AVR. It sounds to me like you might have a pinched wire or a short in your wiring.

I second Midcow2's reply. Check the wiring to the speaker. A textbook desription for a wire issue.

...disconnect it from the receiver before checking it.

Are they expensive because I don't have one at the moment? When I get home I'm going to hook the back right speaker/wires (problem side) into the left rear outlet on the Onkyo. If it still shuts off then the problem is either the wire or the speaker. If it doesn't then it's the receiver.

I hope to God it's not the wire because it took me and a friend 4 hours to fish it through the walls/attic and fill in the holes the first time. Not to mention I don't want to have to pull it all out, ship it back and hope monoprice replaces it.

The cables I'm using are Monoprice (not bluejeans like I thought; that is my sub cable). They are 12AWG CL2 Rated 2-Conductor Loud Speaker Cable - 50ft (For In-Wall Installation). Given that they have an extra coat around the wouldn't they be tougher to crimp?

I am assuming that yuou have a similar setup function in your receiver to mine. I have the Onkyo TX-SR805. You press "setup" on the remote and go into the speaker section. Somewhere you should find a setting for impedance. But if your speakers are 8 ohm, that issue should be moot.

One thing to look for is a single strand of wire at either the speaker end or the receiver. It's so easy for a single strand to create a short and since it's just one strand, it's very hard to see. With the multiple speaker connections on the rear of the receiver all being so close, it's a very easy mistake to make.

If you're using bare wire connections at the terminals, be sure that the bare section of wire is only long enough to go through the little hole in the post. If it's much longer it can possibly touch the next post and you're toast.
