Hi,

Recently i bought 'Denon 1312 HTS' and 'Western Digital HD Media player'.

Connected HD Media player to LCD TV through HDMI Cable.
Connected TV to Home Theater system through Optical Cable.

Now when i play dolby digital videos or songs, the display in Denon shows as "PL II M". Iam not sure what that means.

Can any one suggest the proper connection between TV,HTS and Media Player? so that i can get the correct output. Also suggest whether to use optical cable or HDMI cable

Thanks in Advance,
Revanth

Hi, Revanth.

You can check the owner's manual for your TV, but odds are the issue is that the TV will not output anything but a stereo signal from the optical output if the input is HDMI. It should output Dolby Digital if you're using the internal TV tuner, but a lot of TVs downmix audio from HDMI inputs to stereo for output from the optical jack.

The simplest connection is probably to connect the HD media player to the receiver using an HDMI input, then connect the HDMI output from the receiver to the TV. You could also keep it connected like you do, but connect the optical output on the HD media player to the receiver (if it has such an output), and you might need to set the player up to output audio over the optical connection.

PL II M is Pro Logic II Movie (or Music - A single 'M' is ambiguous). It is a matrix decoder that takes any 2 channel signal and turns it into 5.1.

That is your first clue that the receiver is getting a 2 channel signal. It is getting a 2 channel signal because you connected from the TV to the receiver. The TV is downmixing the 5.1 to 2 channel and sending it out its optical out.

You need the media player connected to the receiver and then the receiver to the TV. You don't need to get audio to the TV - only video. Without looking up the specs on that HTS I can't say exactly the best way to do it but if it supports HDMI inputs then that would be the way to go.

Tried below configuration....

My Denon has Optical Input(TV). Also WD Media player has optical output.

connected Media player and TV through HDMI cable.
and
connected Media player and Denon HTS through Optical cable

Now i can see Dolby in Denon when i play songs/movies. But Please suggest either HDMI cable or Optical cable gives the best output.

For Dolby Digital, either HDMI or optical will work just great.
