Need Help...Sound fading in & out

Can someone help me? I'm trying to figure out what's causing the sound on my receiver to intermittently fade in & out. This is the second receiver this has happened to. The first time, I assumed the receiver was just old & I was looking for an excuse to upgrade. But now, I'm not sure what the problem is.
I changed the speaker wires out & that didn't help.
Thanks for your help.

have too many things plugged into a surge protector or power strip in a place with old wiring?

New place with new wiring...older surge protector, so I just tried plugging directly into the wall...same problem.

Is there a pattern you can put your finger on? Loud passages? Random? All input sources?
Did you check the speakers with other components? Maybe in the speaker?

It seems to be completely random...
At first I thought it may have been linked solely to the CD player, so I switched out the monster cable input wires, thinking it was linked to that...then I started noticing it on the radio as well. I haven't noticed it on my DVD player, because my DVD player has been at the repair shop (which, of course, I'm trying to decide now what I need to replace).
The only "common" thread was that on both receivers, it was the same speakers fading in/out...which, now that you say it may be speakers, I did just switch these speakers back to this receiver (when I brought my DVD player in to get checked, I bought my sub too, because I couldn't isolate the humming noise it was producing, after trying just about everything).
Do you think it could be the speakers?

are you using 5.1? does it fade in and out on all the speakers or only the fronts , or rears etc..

its happened on both of your receivers? only thing i could think of might be your receiver is set to output a center channel, but you dont have one hooked up? that might make a little fade in and out on your front speakers..

but if you do have a center, then i have no idea.
