Need Help selecting Speaker System

Hi guys, this is my first post here and I am seeking some help selecting a audio system for the home theater setup I am currently building.

I presently have a 42in 1080i plasma TV and the Panasonic SCHT1000 Theater System.

I am changing out my current system and have opted to purchase the Oppo 971HD player but now want a good speaker system to compliment this great player.

Any suggestions, bear in mind my limited budget of around $400 USD.

For a 5.1 system?

I recommend purchasing a pair of good speakers, and building your system as more funds are available.

For $400 you could get something like these
