Hello All -
I'm new to the forums here and decided to join after reading several post as it seems there are many people who know a lot more than most of the sales reps out there in our local stores.

I have a nagging problem with my speakers making crackling noises especially when first turning them on. I've had this problem with two sets of speakers but had the same sony receiver for both sets. The first set was Bose Acoustamass 12 and have recently decided to install in-wall units with the exception of my L and R Front speakers and my sub, which are a pair of floor standing Polks and 12" sub. My center channel and surrounds are in-wall polk. Upon first use with both, I had no problems and after a few months, the crackling began.

I understand this is probably very difficult to diagnose w/o physically being there but any advice would be helpful. Could it be user error and that I dont have connections right? Could it be caused if part of the copper end of a wire is touching the receiver itself? Could it be the receiver or just extremely bad luck with home audio? Thanks Guys for your time and help!

The fault is with the age of your receiver. I have a Radio Shack integrated amp that does the same thing. Some of the electical components within the receiver are starting to fail or their is dirt in your potentiometers that control things such as volume, balance, bass, treble, and balance.

Thats a very interesting thought that I would have never come up. Considering that I bought it in 2002, that could very well be true. The good news is I do have the new Yamaha RX-V663 currently on a UPS out for delivery today!! We'll find out soon enough if thats the case. LOL...Ive waited so long to upgrade my receiver, I'm going to be excited just to have component connectivity, let a lone HDMI which I fully plan on taking advantage of!!

My only question to your advice would be why would the receiver perform fine upon installation? Shouldnt the receiver be failing upon a new speaker install?

I think 3db is saying your receiver is likely the problem, not the speakers. If so then the speakers should be fine with a good receiver.
