Need Help on Speaker/Audio Settings

Hi, I am new to this forum. I have browsed this forum previously to help decide on a receiver. I bought the following system below.

Denon 4308 CI receiver
Polk LSi9 Bookshelf Speakers
LSiC Center Channel speaker
DSW Pro400 Subwoofer

I have had the system for a few months now. I am extremely happy with the system so far when watching blu-ray movies but a little disappointed when watching hi-def tv. When watching regular stations, the volume is very loud. When watching hi-def stations on Direct TV, the volume seems to be much lower. Even when going below -27 db, there is very little increase in volume even at -23 db.

Any ideas on why there is such a difference in volume between the hi-def and regular channels or blu-ray movies? Where in my settings can I check to maximize volume output? Is there a setting I can adjust to fix this? Or do I need something else like a amplifier?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The volume differences have nothing to do with your equipment. They are a function of the input source(s.)

If your system is properly level matched and set to the proper level with test tones and spl meter, that should be a good yardstick to show that it is the broadcast station issue. Bluray discs are better mastered to a standard.
