Need help on a connection. What is the correct sequence?

I am using a DVI to HDMI conversion cable to connect a Motorola 6200 cable box to a Denon 3806 receiver and a HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV, a Sony KV32HS420.
I get no video at the TV.
I remember reading that the connection sequence between the box, receiver, and TV had to be in a certain order so the cable box could "shake hands" with the receiver.
I think I read the article here at Audioholics but now I can't find it.
Could somebody please tell me what is the proper way to do the connections
or where to find the information on the proper setup?

Maybe others will chime in, but I seem to recall that you have to turn on the display first, before the source, so that a "handshake" can occur, which allows the units to communicate.
