Hey guys, I'm a newbie here from Edmonton, AB, Canada (Go Oilers Go) and have been lurking around these forums looking at your awesome knowledge.
I haven't been able to find any info on here on the speakers I am looking at getting. So I turn to you experts to give me your honest opinion.
The setup I am looking at is as follows:
Yamaha RXV2500
4 Energy C3 Speakers for mains and rears
Energy CC1 Center Channel
I have no clue what sub to get?

What do you guys think? Sheep you seem to be a fan of Energy, a penny for your thoughts.

Cool! I have a fan! :D

IMO, that system would be killer. I'm am on my way to building a system similar to that (cept C-1 fronts, and C-R1 rears).

The tweeter can sound a little bright in a lively room (hard wood floors, no room treatmenst of any kind) but over all, they perform very well. The build quality is very impressive with WBT binding posts and very solid enclosures.

You could save a buck or 2 by downgrading to C-1s or C-R1s for rears.

As for subwoofers, whats your budget? Hsu, SVS (though expensive to ship) would be a great choice. I like the Energy .3 series subwoofers also. They perform very well for the $$. Depending of your room size, I think an S10.3 would do a great job. Hsu STF-2 would be a similar subwoofer performance wise.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the reply Sheep.

I'm getting a pretty good deal or so I think on these items as they are last years models.
Yamaha RXV2500 for $849 CDN
4 Energy C3 for $550
Energy CC1 for $240

The sub I have budgeted around $500 CDN. I was looking at the Velodyne DPS-10B, but I'm not sure how well this would complement the above.

I have also looked at Definitive Technology subs but do not know too much about them.

I have also thought about the Athena Micra 6 system, which gets great reviews and is made by the same company as Energy. The set comes with a 8 inch powered sub and is on sale for $299.

If you can afford the Energy system (C-3s, CC-1,RXV2500) go for it. That system will blow the Athena of out the metaphorical water.

I have the DPS-12, and I only bought it cause it was on sale for about 4 hours at $399 CAD. For 500CAD, an STF-2 or S10.3 would be your best bets(you might have to talk down the S10.3).

Never heard Deftechs, but if you like them, by all means, grab em.

Yeay, a fellow Canadian!

I'd look at the Cadence X-Sub which is aval on ebay for around 290, with affordable shipping. Its a kick *** sub, but only does 25hZ, while some of the svs/hsu units will go down to 15Hz. Dont get me wrong, it is a beast, it will shake your room like no tomorrow, but if you are an audiophile, and you have a bit of money to spend, you may want to look at something that has a bit more frequency responce.

http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-10isd.cfm that seems to be right in your budget, though maybe a bit over b/c of the exchange rate.

Has anybody from Canada bought from SVS before?
The exchange rate is not too much of a concern as I get preferred rates at work (a Bank).
Are there any customs duty/tariffs and taxes that need to be paid when crossing the border? or is this bad boy manufactured in the USA and covered under NAFTA?
If anyone knows this information, it would sure help.

A PB-10 is over 750 CAD all said and done. Thats why I didn't recommend it. I've also heard the XSUB is only good till 28Hz or so. The Energy S10.3 is good to 21Hz, and the STF-2 is 25Hz.

Hey Dinkeye just wondering where you got your price from on the RX-V2500, i am from Newfoundland and i am considering buying the RX-V2600 but it is going to set me back about $1500 CDN + 15% tax, i would probably consider the 2500 also for that much of a price difference. What are the 2600's going for out west? I lived in Calgary for 4 years but can't remember the names of any of the A/V stores there. I they are cheaper out west i could just get one of my friends out there to pick one up for me and ship it to the rock.

I've seen them for around $1200 at A&Bsound. The 1500 was $590 on boxing day.

Yes, I am Canadian too :)

I forgot it was the 1500 that was 590, not the 2500. But it doesn't matter anymore, cause its not that price anymore.

Its decent. I *think* it was around $1200 here, but that might have been a 2500. I would go look, but I am way to tired to drive ;)

I got the price on the 2500 at A&B Sound, it is true they are asking $1199, however, I just negotiated my way down.
I'll bet if you play your cards right you can get the 1500 for the same boxing day price of $590 or $580.
The Energy C3's I am getting are listed at $450 a pair, but the boxing day sale on them was $300 a pair and I just demanded the same price for 2 pair and he gave in!!
