Hi,
I am not very well versed with all the HT lingo and know very little about the kind of systems out there.

My budget is $1500.00 USD.

I have 36 inch Sony Vega system and an OK DVD player which plays, MP3, jpeg and progressive scan DVD player. No other audio system.

I don't want to have a huge form factor in the form of bookshelf speakers. I like small speakers like Bose ( don't need this necessarily).

What kind of system do you guys suggest and also will a universal DVD player which has the built in A/V receiver like Denon 2900 be a good choice for me.

Thanks

Easy with $1500. Look into ANY brand in the range of $300-$500. Compare their features by reading the manuals on the web and then ask questions. You will get lots of opinions. That leaves you $1000 for speakers. Lots of companies make good speakers in that range (for 5, maybe stretching a bit if you want a really good sub).

Check out the audioholics $1000 recommended system for ideas. I have the 502 they recommend and I can tell you its superb. Easy to operate and enough power to fill the room nicely (rather small room 16X12).
