Need help ID HDMI issue

Need some help figuring out what the issue with my denon/tv is.

I have a denon x3800h and a Sony x95j, and I can’t seem to get a consistent handshake (not sure if that’s the right term) between the HDMI earc connection. Some days the denon turns on/off when the TV is turned on/off, but more often than not the denon needs to be manually turned on/off.

Also, when I try to watch Netflix YouTube etc off my TV, a few mins into watching I get a msg saying unable to find external speakers, switch to tv speakers (or something to that effect). When I try to set the audio back to external speakers in the TV settings, the TV goes into input 3 and turns on my ps5.
After several attempts to fix the issue in settings (feels like no rhythm or reason and just trial and error), I am able to get the denon and tv work together.

I’ve tried different hdmi cables but this doesn’t seem to make a difference. TV and denon are up to date on firmware.
Can anyone help me figure out what the issue is?

I wouldn't particularly expect the on/off functionality from HDMI-CEC to work well among various brands, and just don't use it myself. HDMI-CEC is not exactly a great "standard" among different brands. I use a universal remote with macros to avoid that issue. eARC has improved things somewhat by some reports....but not always. Sometimes soft resets and/or full resets may help...

I have a Marantz SR7015 and use CEC it works fine with my TV (LG) and my Oppo and chromecast stick, I do have a Sony TV in another room and know it is crap when it comes to CEC settings and also know a friend at work who has the same issues with his TV and CEC, he got round it by having all his gear controlled via his Receiver as trying to run it all via the TV failed.
