I have a newbie question for you guys, I have a Panasonic SC-PT960 HTIB which only plays dvds. I'am wanting to purchase a blu ray player and was wondering if its possible to make it work with my Panasonic HTIB.

Currently I have the Panasonic receiver connected to my digital cable box with a optical audio cable and a hdmi from the receiver to my tv(42" LG with 3 hdmi's). I have a hdmi running from my digital cable box to my tv.

The Panasonic receiver has only 1 hdmi and 1 optical audio, how can I connect the blu-ray player to everything while still getting the surround sound from the Panasonic receiver.

Can I just run a hdmi from the Panasonic receiver to the blu ray or just connect blu ray player to tv with hdmi? and would the sound still work if I just put the panasonic receiver to d-in (digital in) like I normally do when watching tv?

Basically I want to get the best quality sound out of my blu ray player without having to upgrade to a new surround sound system, I bought my Panasonic HTIB like a month before the one with the blu ray player came out lol.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

If the HTIB accepts hirez audio over HDMI, then use the HDMI. You will likely have to have the player decode the formats, because a quick google seems to say that your system only has legacy decoders.

If it can't accept the audio over HDMI, then use the optical. Yes, now the player sends video via HDMI to TV, and the optical is used for sound. You will get slightly improved bitrate with DD, and double the bitrate with DTS. I'm talking bluray here. But, this is not the "best" available to you on the disc.

However, who cares, no offense. Those speakers are probably of such low quality, no offense, that you probably couldn't hear the difference anyways.

thanks for the response, so your saying I should try connecting the blu ray player to the panasonic receiver first using hdmi? then if it doesnt work then just connect blu ray player to tv using hdmi while leaving pansonic reciever connected to digital cable box using optical cable for sound?

If HDMI doesn't work for sound, then you want an optical cable directly from bluray player to the receiver.

If the HDMI accepts mch LPCM to begin with, make sure to delve into player to have it decode all of the advanced codecs, because like I said already, I don't think yours can (but you're the one that owns it; you can tell me).
