I am new to this site. I have a Sony XBR 40 inch LCD TV, Sony DREAM SYSTEM surround dx-80. And an XBOX360. I plan to use cable card option for bright house. I am on a waiting list because the cards are in high demand. The surround is connected via HDMI to the TV. Coax connects to the TV directly.(not using cable box), My goal is to hook the xbox to the surround sound, and not have to connect to the tv. Also, I have no sound from the tv passing into the surround sound. I figure I need to get audio cables from the tv back to the surround sound. That said, can anyone make a simple to understand suggestion? Or am I out of luck. Currently the XBOX is connected to the spare jacks on the monitor, and gets no surround while playing games. Or watching TV. Only when using DVD.

Thanks in advance

You should be getting digital sound from the TV to your surround system via the HDMI (I believe).

It's possible the source is not Dolby Digital, so to get surround sound you would have to switch the audio system to Pro Logic mode?

As for the Xbox 360, you'll need to buy (if you don't have one) an optical cable and run that from the optical output jack that's found at the beginning of the Xbox 360's component cable attachment.

It's beside the cord on the square bit that plugs into the back of the Xbox 360, there's a spot there for the optical cable.

If your Sony surround thing has more than one optical input on the back, you could also run an optical cable from your TV to your surround system if you really aren't getting Dolby Digital from the HDMI (though I suspect it's the TV broadcast not actually having Dolby Digital). Otherwise you can just use regular analog cables and only have stereo or Pro Logic.

Thank You

I did the optical cable, and now the surround works with the Xbox. Last part is to get sound from the tv to play with surround sound system. Currently the HDMI is connected from surround to tv. That seems to only work with dvd. When I watch tv, the only speaker that works is the tv built in speaker. I am trying RCA cords for audio today.

Note, XBOX360 is cool with surround sound

So true Toni, you'll never go back after experiencing a game in surround sound, the immersion is incredible!
