I have a 58" 1080p plasma, bought an Onkyo 805 (7.1 receiver) and couldn't decide whcih speakers to go with. I think I will go with JBL or Klipsch, my budget for the speakers are around $1000-$1500 total. This system will be used for movies only, so don't want to spend big bucks for the speakers.

My 2 options are:

JBL Stadium 3-Way, Dual 8" Floorstanding ($188 x2)
JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer ($229)
JBL LC1 3-Way Dual 5-1/4-Inch ($330) OR JBL Venue 5-Inch 2-Way ($99)
JBL Venue Series Arena 6-Inch 2-Way Speakers Pair ($127 x2)
JBL will cost me around $1000 for 7 .1 system

OR

Klipsch RF15 Floor($250 x2)
Klipsch KSW-10 Sub ($300)
Klipsch RC35 Center ($300)
Klipsch SB2 Surround Pair ($300)
Klipsch SS-1 Surround Pair ($250)
Klipsch will cost around $1650 for 7.1 system

My 2nd question is if I mix match the JBL and Klipsch (ex Klipsch floor speakers with JBL surround speakers), will this sound OK? Or 2nd example, will the JBL LC1 3-Way Dual Center speaker (LC1 is a little bit powerful than Venue center) match the JBL Stadium 3-Way, Dual 8" Floorstandings?

Thanks for your help !!!!

While I don't have much of an opinion on many of the speakers you have posted. I can comment on the subs in general. I haven't been too impressed by the subs put out by Klipsch or JBL on the lower end. You might want to look into svsound or hsu the latter of which I have yet to hear but is well recommended around here.

About mixing the speakers. It shouldn't matter too much with a movie experience if you have one brand fronts and a different brand of surrounds, but one thing you should try to do is stay constant in the series of fronts and center you get. If you get one type of front speakers and a different center you will probably end up with timbre mismatch which will probably take away from the movie experience.

Hi os2009,

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about the JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer you are looking at. I picked one up a little over a month ago and was very unimpressed. Now granted I did not go through any real testing for placement or anything like that, but I do not think that in this case it would have mattered too much. I did setup the bass management on my receiver.

I was attracted by the price as it was my first subwoofer purchase and I can now definately say you get what you pay for.

I watched a movie with it, Matrix, and at first was impressed as it was my first experience with a sub. I then went on holidays and watched another movie with it when I came back, Blade II, and was left wanting. I know you cannot judge a sub by watching two movies with it, but I do not think I would really be happy with this sub, regardless of the movie.

The worst part is that I am now a week past my return date and cannot take it back, tried and was sent packing. E-Bay here I come :D

I would look at an SVS or HSU option for a subwoofer, I know I am

Good Luck
Michael
