He's got some great speakers, but his receiver doesn't even come close to having enough power. The speakers are klipsch KG5.5, (you can read about them here KG 5.5 | Klipsch . They are 8 ohms, 100 watts normal input, 500 watts max. I really don't understand how to match up a power amp with speakers, so if anyone can give me some info, that would be great. :)

What receiver does he have?

With those speakers being rated at 8 ohms nominal and having a high sensitivity (98db/1w/1m) any reasonable receiver should power them to pretty loud levels. As an example, driving those @ 10w they would be outputing near 100db SPL at 10 feet away. Those numbers are without any room gain so your actual SPL would likely be higher.

It's a yamaha ax-592, Yamaha AX 592 , apparently it's an integrated amp. I thought it was a receiver. It's 100 watts per channel. The speakers are plenty loud even with this, but I'm sure they can handle much more power. I've seen him have these speakers going for well over an hour with the volume turned up full. I tried to explain how to him that he will burn out the voice coils, but he still thinks they will be fine. I want to get him a power amp for his birthday that will really push these speakers. Want to keep it under $500. I'm not actually going to spend that on him, I'm way to cheap. :D His wife already said she would pay $300.

You don't need an amp with a speaker that is 98dB efficient. In a smallish to medium sized room you most likely couldn't be in the same room when really getting on the Yamaha integrated you are running with.

I have a suspicion that the Yammy isn't even breaking a sweat on those speakers.
