Hey All, I am investing in Paradigm's Studio 100', 690cc, adp 590's for S and R, and the Sub 15. What I cannot decide is whether to go with a Yamaha 3010, an Anthem rec or go seperate with Rec and Amp. I would really not like to spend the money on seperate amp and rec but will that kill the true performance of the system? I would love some opinions, please let me know.

Thanks, AC

I like Anthem but they don't have a receiver in the same power/feature class as the Yamaha 3010. This is a beast and will easily drive your Studio series into ear bleed level. I'd be very surprised if you would need additional amplification.

3db, thanks for the response. The only concern I have is that I found a bench test of the 3010 and it looked like it only pushed about 70 w/ch at 7ch. Is that really sufficient, or are these tests incorrect?

Rather than getting the Yamaha, I recommend the Denon 4311(or 12)

About the same caliber of receiver for about the same cost, but I think Audyssey XT32 is a deciding factor.

The Denon may have a bit less current reserves, but a quality separates amp like an Emotiva XPA-3 will wipe the floor with what ANY receiver can do.

Re: 70w into 7 channels.

I can think of exactly one scenario where this might matter, and that's a video game called Folklore, specifically the underwater level where all four surrounds are firing as are the mains.

beyond that, movies and music use surround speakers so sparingly, they may not even be getting TEN watts!! 70w is a lot for surrounds, especially side surrounds which are so close to you.

Like Grant pointed out, its very rare that all channels get full use all around. I own over 300 movie and not one of them fire all channels at the same volume level. If you look at the 2 channel charateristic's, its coming quite close to doubling its output when the speaker impedance is halfed. Not too many receivers out there come that close.

The other arguement is Audssy verses Yamaha's YPAO. Everyone claims that Auddessy is that much better but no one has yet put the them toe to toe, espically with Yamaha's latest version. I own a Yamaha RX-V1800 with a single point room correction and I'm very happy with its results. I'm never fatigued or irritated after extended listening sessions at high volumes.
