Hi, welcome to the Forum.

We will need a couple more questions answered before trying to help, and since many of the responders to your questions will be North American, we will probably blunder along with equipment brands and models that might not be available to you.

What are your speaker preferences....stand alone "in-room" speakers, in-wall installed speakers, a mix of in-wall and in-ceiling (please, do not consider all in-ceiling units, unless you want to mount your screen on the ceiling and lay on the floor to watch it :) ). Large, medium or small physical size for the speakers.....WAF ? (wife approval factor)....

For the a/v receiver, what will your sources be, is HDMI required or wanted, do you want to use the new lossless HD audio codecs and Blu-ray HD-DVD's ?

What HDTV or projector/screen are you considering ?

well, that's enough of an overload for now....

G'Day mate.

Australia houses many very good brands in audio.

Sonique is one I can think of. http://www.sonique.com.au/ht/index.htm

Marantz, Yamaha, Onkyo, and Denon all make excellent receivers.

http://www.duratone.com.au/ is a Paradigm dealer.

That should give you a good start.

It would really help to know if these speakers are going to be used mostly for home theater or for music. If if is a mix of both can you estimate how much (ie 80% movies/TV, 20% music)?

Being you're down under, you have the advantage to check out some new speakers from JBL that we can't, as yet. The LS series, which are horn loaded. If you're looking for free standing speakers or bookshelf types. I've read a number of good reviews from Europe and Australia.
Here is what they look like.
