Hi, I am new to these forums, and am in desperate need of help, as i have just blown out one of my dads stereo speakers.

As far as i know, these are old speakers, and i dont know what to do at this point.

Model is
B&W loudspeaker
Matrix 2
series 2
serial number 000128

The tweeter is shattered, and the woofer buzzes and does not produce a clean sound at any volume.

Powered by NAD power amp monitor series 2600 and pre amp monitor series 1300, in a stereo setup.

Any suggested courses of action welcome
please help

You will have to get in touch with B & W and see if they can rebuild the drivers you blew, or supply new drivers. You have to use B & W drivers. If B & W can not rebuild or replace those drivers because they are out of parts, then you have totaled that set of speakers.

I assume you cranked ghastly rock music through them, for which they were never designed.

I think this is the speaker you are talking about, is that right?

Those date from 1986 and were among the last speakers designed by John Bowers, before his untimely death.

I think it doubtful those speakers can be repaired, because of their age, and that's a pity. If I remember correctly the bass drivers had Bextrene cones. This is a plastic polymer that has not been made anywhere in the world for a few years now. So unless they have some old cones that will put you out of luck.

One option is to search eBay and see if any are getting parted out, however with those speakers that is unlikely. It is more likely a set of those speakers will come up on eBay or Audiogon complete.

The descendants of those speakers is the current B & W 800 series loudspeakers. The closest descendant of that speaker is the 802D. I think the woofer in your speaker is somewhere between 10 and 11 inches if my memory is correct. The 802D uses two 8" Rohacell drivers in place of the single Bextrene. Unfortunately the cost of the 802Ds is $14,000 per pair.

However in their day your speakers were comparably priced when corrected for inflation. So unfortunately, I suspect your father will not be too happy, but I suspect he will come to forgive you.

B & W had the wrong picture in their archive. The picture above is the matrix 802 series 2. Here is your Dad's speaker.

That was not nearly such an expensive speaker. It is an 8 poly woofer and and aluminum tweeter. Date of the speakers is 1986, I see from a post on AudioKarma that at least the tweeter diaphragm is a available, but if you have destroyed the voice coil you are out of luck.

yes, the second image is the speaker.
As for how i broke them, i had run my guitar through the DI box hooked up to my mac. The out levels of this box are exponentially high compared to those coming right out of the 8th inch out in the back of the comp. I had forgotten to decrease the volume, and upon turning on the box, a terrible sound came out of the speakers, and the amp and preamp both shut off, along with everything else in the room. Had to reset the circuit breaker.

This is good that the tweeter is available, i dont know enough about speaker anatomy to tell if the voice coil is damaged. Would it be safe, in your opinion, for me to open up the speaker and see if i can see anything else? i have done tons of work on guitar amplifiers and computers, but these seem a little more risky to deal with.

I also know an old guitar amp/cabinet repairsman who has done alot of work for me, i think im going to give him a call as well.

also, i looked into the recess behind the woofer, saw a sticker that indicates they were purchased or assembled or something on 18 march 1988.

Not that I want to kick you when you're down but you might want to get a small dedicated system for playing your guitar. Are you doing this instead of using a guitar amp or recording and playing it back? You should be able to set the input/output separately. What software and input module are you using?

I have tons of guitar amps, i was just playing around with using the larger stereo system instead of studio monitors. The guitar cable goes into an interface which goes to the mac via firewire. The input and output levels can be set seperately, i just for got to ajust them, thus totalling the left speaker

You leaned an expensive lesson, Hi-Fi speakers should never be used as instrument speakers.

You can tell if the tweeter voice coil is burnt out. Disconnect the tweeter and and test the resistance with a multimeter. You should get a reading of about 6 to 7 ohms. If not the that tweeter is done and that set of speakers.

I would contact B & W about parts availability and confirm what I have found scouting the net. Only B & W can supply factory parts for those speakers. I would not advise repair from off brand parts.

Yeah use pro audio speakers for this. They can take the abuse.
