I've always used a good receiver to amplify the record player. I then use Cool Edit Pro v1.2 to record the source and I also use it for noise reduction and they turn out very good. It takes time to fine tune the noise reduction but it's worth it if you have a lot of pops and hiss.

I recently did the same thing - it is tedious to filter out a lot of the vinyl noise from the LP's, but it is possible. I got mine to sound fairly close to CD quality. I didn't use the receiver though - hooked the TT right into an external soundcard via RCA plugs and a pre-amp, USB into the computer. Simple and straightforward, and gets the signal through. The computer program you copy it with is where the magic happens. :)
