I gave up on Dish last year and switched to antenna, I get enough channels over the air for what little TV I watch. But, this left me with a DVDR that wil not work without an external tuner.

So, I want to go with a DVR, but don't want Tivo etc. Also, a DVD recorder might be nice too, but not necessary. I was looking at this one:

MAGNAVOX MDR513H/F7 HDD and DVD Recorder with Digital Tuner

Any suggestions?

Magnavox generally has pretty junky products, and based on the reviews, there are a lot of people who have had 'bad' units. But, that is your own research to deal with.

I personally would VERY strongly recommend a home theater PC for you. Not a desktop computer with a mouse and keyboard, but a PC for $500 or so, with a remote control and a nice on screen user interface. You can plug your antenna right into it to record HD shows in HD. You can playback movies, and do all the other stuff which may be worth doing. I know there are some free, or pay once options for DVR schedules and program guides which will allow you the same type of Tivo like interface without the regular costs and fees, but with far higher quality than the Magnavox. I can't tell from the blurbs, but most DVD/DVR units do not actually record in HD. They can tune digital channels, but rarely do they actually record HD content in HD.

I know a few people who use HTPCs and their setup was easy to use and very much enjoyed by family members including the wife and kids.

Though I normally always push for HTPCs here, I might not for this situation. I have messed around with many PVR software solutions and have found all of them to suck. The absolute best I used was windows media center, and I found it to be an underwhelming experience. If you're willing to deal with a bit of setup frustration, an HTPC isn't a bad idea, just not great. Unfortunately I have no better options to give you though.

I'm not worried about recording in HD or anything, and actually I have considered a digital converter box wired up to my existing DVDR, but don't really need to record DVDs for what I'm trying to do. I have a program I like that comes on at 4:00 AM. Since I work second shift all was well, just watch it before I go to bed. Well, I no longer live alone, and (according to her) staying up till 4:00 AM to watch a show won't fly any more. The show isn't even brodcast in HD, and while I had dish I recorded the episodes I wouldn't be able to catch on a DVDRW, and just kept re-recording the same DVDRW.

The recorder lited above is a stretch for what I want to spend, really looking for a sub $200 option.

If I were you I would probably start with a basic converter box hooked up to your existing DVDR. It's easy and it's ready to go for almost nothing.

Not sure if you have an old PC to try out Windows Media Center... and I've personally never done it myself, but when I played some with my friend's setup, it was nice. It certainly can be a very inexpensive option if you already have a PC around which can be hooked up to your TV. You aren't required to buy a 'brand new' rig for it. Not like you are going to be doing some crazy gaming or anything.

You'd needs some good performance to handle video well. It's been a long time since I messed with tv tuners and what not I really want to give it a go again.

Probably what I'll end up doing. Setting up a PC just to record a single show is not a reasonable option. Heck, if I cold find a cheap VCR with a digital tuner that would work, I'm not loking for great picture quality or anything...

What TV show are you trying to watch? When does it air? Do you have internet service?

That is indeed a good find. My OTA Box is terrible and it's one part I'd like to upgrade.
