Need Denon x4700h help

I just purchased a Denon x4700h. I have what I'm learning to be a unique setup: 3.1.4. Three floor speakers, sub, and four (4) ceiling speakers. The Denon setup forces a 5.1.4, adding floor surrounds. This causes Audssey to fail. I've tried many different wiring and Amp Assign combinations but nothing works. I can't get the four ceiling speakers to work unless I wire them as four surrounds vs. Height 1 & 2. Any advice?

It looks to me you can do 3.1.2 but not 3.1.4. If you must have 4 ceiling speakers then I guess you have to add two more speakers. If floor and walls are not possible, can you not install two more ceiling speakers positioned close to the walls and wire them as surrounds?

Thanks for your response. Two more ceiling speakers may be possible. Just hate to wreck the main family room with six in the ceiling. Is this a Denon 4700 problem or common with most receivers? Would a prepro help?

I am sure it would be the same for the Marantz prepros. For others like Anthem, Yamaha's, I would have to investigate.

Thanks. You know your stuff. Both Denon and Marantz use the same Audssey program.

I can operate all four ceiling speakers as surround but front height and rear height surround is the goal.

Denon and Marantz are sister companies (under Sound United) and share a lot of features even outside of Audyssey. Can't say I've seen much on trying to setup a 3.1.4 system, tho....so tuning in to see how it works out and what other processors may offer. Mounting surrounds up near the ceiling may negate some of the Atmos effectiveness, too, there should be a separation of the bed layer and the atmos speakers. Good luck!

Personally I would wire the rear ceiling speakers as surrounds, and run it as 5.1.2 with the front two ceiling speakers as heights or tops depending on how far forward they are. I’m not an advocate of surround speakers in the ceiling with Height/top speakers since you need vertical separation between ear level and height layer for Atmos to work.otherwise there’s no point if they’re all on the same plane.

If I added any in this case it would be surrounds at ear height and go 5.1.4.

Your problem is that your set up is non standard and not recommended. You need to add two surround speakers, then you will have an Atmos set up. Ceiling speakers really are just for Atmos. You are actually probably better off with 3.1 and forget the ceiling speakers, if you can't add surrounds.

Thanks for everyone's help. I may try and add 2-surrounds but ear level is not possible. We have a large remodeled family room with wood floors. No place to put surrounds ear level and/or hide the wires. So, I will try to add surrounds to the side panels of our ceiling or replace the receiver. Great advice, thanks again.

I have to say that the biggest mistake I see on this forum, is putting a surround system in a room that is not suitable for it. That is a bad mistake and a waste of money.
Most rooms are NOT suitable for surround systems and putting one in, is a downgrade. It sounds to me as if a good 2.1 or 3.1 system is what would give the best results in that room. That increases the budget for the fronts, which is usually a massive upgrade. If you want a surround experience, it seems you should be building it in a different room.

I love music and live concerts. I must make the most of what I have. Another room is not an option. Not being passionate about music is not an option.

Thanks for all who responded and all your advice.

No reason you cant connect the rear top speakers as surrounds and see how it sounds, might work fine as a non standard 5.1.2 system, we arent usually that sensitive to where sound comes from when its behind but some are more than others.
A 3.1.2 setup can work well also, have read a couple of threads where that was successful.

Good luck, hope it works out well.
