Need Center to match Rocket RS850

I know I should match the center channel with the fronts but, the rsc200 Bigfoot is way too tall. The space it needs to fit in is 8" High max and about 10" Deep, width doesn't matter.

Looking for something $600 or less. It will be used for 60% watching movies and 40% music.

Is the ELT525C a viable option or should I go with something else?

The "Bigfoot" (rsc200) is the matching centre channel for the rocket lineup. However I have read on their forums that even though it is the matching centre channel the engineers/mls purposely voiced the bigfoot differently than than the rocket fronts so even though it is the "matching" centre it will not achieve perfect timbre with the mains.....here is the link...I would talk with one of their customer support people to see what they would say is the best subsitute to match with the 850's.

I'd recommend the Polk Audio LSiC.

7" tall, 9" deep and 21.75" wide - so it should fit physically into the space that you mentioned.

The LSiC uses the same ring radiator tweeter as the Rocket towers, so it will have a similar (not identical, but very similar) timbre and voice.

You can likely find it for an even lower price, but Crutchfield is a trusted online retailer and their price is below $600, so it should fit your budget as well :)

The LSis and the Rockets do not have a similar timbre, as the tweeter is not the only thing you need to match. I would not recommend the LSi-C as a matching center and it is nowhere near as good as the Bigfoot. I would not recommend any other center besides the Bigfoot actually, though I know it won't fit in your available space.

I'm not sure of j_garcia's personal experience with the LSiC and the RSC200, but I would definitely say that the comment of the LSiC being "nowhere near as good as the [RSC200]" is an exaggeration.

Is the LSiC a matching center to the Rockets? No. Of course not. And in terms of sound, it is more forward and less accurate than the Rocket center. But to say "nowhere near as good" implies a far greater difference in sound quality than is supported by actual listening.

Simply put, I maintain that the LSiC is a good choice for this situation. Here, we are limited mostly by physical size requirements. So we first look to meet the physical size requirement and then look for a speaker that matches the sound qualities of the Rockets as closely as possible. We cannot expect a perfect match, but we try to get as close as we can.

And in my listening experience, the LSiC comes closer than other center speakers that would physically fit into the available space. From top to bottom, the timbre is not the same as the Rockets, but with a center speaker, I consider the reproduction of the human voice to be the most critical factor. The tweeter is largely responsible for the majority of human voice reproduction. Towards the lower registers of male voices, the midrange drivers and cabinet design start to play a larger role, but for the greatest portion of the human voice, it is the tweeter that is reproducing the sound.

Obviously, the solution for Green_Flea can only be decided by Green_Flea listening with the speaker in his own setup. But to dismiss the LSiC out of hand would be a mistake IMO. It may not be acceptable to Green_Flea - that could definitely be the end result. But IMO, it is worth a try and, in fact, I believe it to have the best chance of meeting Green_Flea's needs while retaining a decent match to the Rockets' audio qualities.

Is the LSi-C worth a shot? Sure. Since it will fit, it certainly won't hurt to give it a try.

Am I exaggerating? Not in my opinion. I've listened to the Rockets quite extensively and the Bigfoot is one of the best center speakers I've heard, though it is also unfortunately one of the largest. The midrange is clean and has a slightly forward sound to the line overall. I've owned LSis previously and I found the midrange to be a bit average for their price; a bit congested in the upper midrange and less forward than the Rockets. Not even close is maybe a bit harsh. The tweeter is the shining point for the LSis IMO, though they have great cabinets and they are very good speakers for sure, just not among my favorites. That is only my personal opinion however, and speakers and sound preference are a personal thing.

For sure, j_garcia - I think we're in agreement :)

I totally agree with you that the LSiC is not the equal of the RSC200 and that the RSC200 is the better speaker. It was only the phrase "not even close" that I found to be - as you put it - a bit harsh ;)

In general, I think a lot of us describe larger gaps in performance as a way to try and emphasize that there is a difference. In reality though, the gaps are usually pretty small when you think about it. My favorite pet peeve is the "night and day difference" description, which is almost never apt. :p

This may seem a little off-the-wall, but I recommend a Def Tech Procenter C2 speaker. They are no longer in production but you can find them sometimes on eBay.

I replaced a Def Tech system with Rockets a couple of years ago. I was really amazed to find that the Def Tech C2 was very nearly the equal of the Bigfoot in sound quality. There is not a great deal of difference.

The C2 is under 7" high and under 10" deep, so it should fit your space nicely.

The current Def Tech model is the Procenter 2000. I have never heard it, so I don't know if it is as good.

Mount it

I mounted my Bigfoot. It is really the best solution for most applications. There is a Sanus tv mount that you can pickup at Target for about $50 and it works perfectly. This has been reccomended many times on the AV123 forums. 'll try to get you a pic of my setup. I have the 850's too.

Can you mount it above the screen?
I could mount the Bigfoot above the screen but it would be off center by about 11 inches, and i think that would look freaking lame, especially with such a big center. I have a weird shaped living room.
