Hey guys, I am building a 36 X 16 ft HT and need advice on the most effective ceiling tiles that won't break my bank.

I need 144 2 X 2 tiles.

Is 1 inch thickness enough or do I need 2 inch thickness?

Thanks

A decent 1" tile with insulation in the cavities up above will do a good job and provide some broadband bass control.

Just remember that ANY suspended ceiling system like this is losing you isolation.

As a follow-up to Bryan's post, I would consider "decent" to be any ceiling tile with an NRC of 0.90 or higher. You usually won't get this sort of rating with "off-the-shelf" tiles from the home improvement store. I would advise looking for "high-NRC" tiles from good suppliers like Armstrong or USG.

Also note that there are diffusive options for T-grid ceilings available from manufacturers like Acoustics First, Auralex, RPG, etc. IMO, they are a better option for HTs with ceiling heights of 8' and higher.

Make sure you don't paint the ceiling tiles. It will ruin their acoustic properties. You can get them in different colors from the manufacturer.
