I am awaiting my new Onkyo TX-SR502 receiver to replace my old Sony component based system. My living room is approx. 18'X 20' with a 10' ceiling. Floor surface is hardwood. The room is open on three sides to adjoining rooms with 8' ceilings. Basically I have about a 2'-3' wall space from the ceiling down on three walls of my living room. I think I need some decent size speakers (bookshelf size or larger) to make this system sound ok in this room. I am considering purchasing the Onkyo SKS-HT520 speakers ($350) (this is the price range I am looking at right now. I see a lot of recomendations for the Athena speakers and others that are satt. speakers but not meant for larger areas? So what do you suggest for a very budget speaker setup for this large room with budget receiver used primarily for TV/movie viewing? The rear surrounds will be wall mounted, and the front Mains will be on large inset shelves (rear ported not good?). Thanks, Tom

The Athena speakers would be a great choice due to there high efficiency. The Onkyo package is not bad either. However its not at the same level as Athena. You might want to consider taking things slow and go with just a left and right at first and slowly put together a 5.1 system that will be of much higher quality and sound far superior to a budget speaker pack. The Athena ASF2 comes to mind. Its a good sized floor stander thats efficient and should work well in a med to large room. Configure the receiver for 2 channels right now and as you pick up speakers later just reconfigure the receiver as needed. This is just one option of many. But in the end will give you much better performace.

Good things come to the ones who wait is my motto.
