Here is my DVD Player/Receiver info:

DVD Player - Pioneer Elite DV-45A
Receiver - Pioneer Elite VSX-35TX

I bought my first DVD-A about 2 weeks ago (Stone Temple Pilots: Core) and am having trouble playing it. I just recently found out that DVD-A will only play 5.1 analog and I use optical cables for all my sound needs (Cable Box, Xbox, DVD player).

How would I go about the analog connection? Should I just get the old Red/White plugs out and hook it up that way? Will i get the 5.1 sound with that method?

Thanks for reading.

You'll need 6 analog cables for 5.1 sound. The old white/red type will work but you'll want to get decent cables for best results. But don't go overboard, it unlikely you'll hear a 10x improvement between a $10 cable and a $100 cable.

No worries, I read enough on this site about cable to spend to much. Plus, I'm not really sure I want to delve into DVD-A that much. I was pretty much turned off when I found out it's analog.

Out of curiosity, what cables are you or anyone else here using for DVD-A?

Thanks for your response!

Darkos, before discounting DVD-A, and SACD for that matter, (they're both digital by the way), please do your research. It sounds like you have some very basic misconceptions. By turning your back on these formats you'll be missing what is possibly the best advancement in music since the leap from mono to stereo. A well produced/engineered DVD-A (or SACD) will be miles better than a DTS disc - not even sure they're still making DTS, in audio-only form anymore. Compared to a redbook cd - well, that's not even fair since after listening to DVD-A's you may not want to ever listen to your cd collection again. They're THAT good. You have a nice combo player there, check out some DVD-A's and SACD's.

As for cables, I'm currently using Acoustic Research (from Best Buy), and DVD-A's sound fantastic ;)

Hawkeye maybe his confusion is because the connection he is making is analog, which for most DVD-A and SACD players is the only choice. Though, we both know the the material itself is digital. Just a guess.

Thanks for the replies all. I'm not all confused anymore after I learned why it wouldn't play. I just couldn't understand why the optical cable wouldn't work for the DVD-A. Then again I don't know much about any of this as I think I know just enough to be dangerous to myself and others. :D

I know I said I was pretty much turned off but I should of clarified. With Turkey day and Christmas coming I'm not ready to buy a bunch of cables to play my one DVD-A. I'm going to wait til after the holidays for something like this. ;)

@Hawkeye

I'm a Best Buy addict and I venture there all the time. What is the exact kind of cable I should look for? As in Acoustic Research xxxxxxxxxx cable. Perhaps I can get my gf to buy them for christmas or something.

Again, I appreciate all your responses on the matter.

LOL...been there, done that. In fact, I'm still fairly new to all this myself and as a result am still learning. Just trying to impart some of what I've learned to make things easier/ clearer for others. Hope I didn't sound too condescending, that was definitely not was I was aiming for.

As far as A/R cables from BB, here is a couple suggestions:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051384698663&skuId=4117887&type=product - (one cable, you'll need multiples of this)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1089890284109&skuId=6781217&type=product - (6 in 1, might be neater but you'll pay a bit more for convenience).

You could get 6 of the above singles and tape them together, or, there are cable management products out there. They won't improve sound but may tidy things up a bit.

Have a great holiday season all...

No worries, if I would of worded it correctly I could of made it not sound like I was coming down on DVD-A/SACD or what have you. I would of repsonded in the same way. :p

In fact, the whole reason why I even bought a DVD-A disc is because of a THX demo DVD I have and it had a sample of swing music and an orchestra that sounded great in 5.1.

Thanks again for your help as it's really appreciated. :)
