Hi all I'm new to subwoofers, and need help. I have a pretty high end two channel stereo as my main listening system. Never got into surround sound, old fashion that way I guess. So this sub thing is pretty new to me. I am looking for some high quality sound for my desktop Mac Pro 3.06 12 core, and was thinking of putting the following together.

Audioengine a@ speakers : Audioengine 2 - Audioengineusa.com

Dayton Sub 800 Subwoofer: Dayton Audio SUB-800 8" 80 Watt Powered Subwoofer 300-627

Don't want to spend a fortune on a computer sound system, and thought this looked pretty good. For $89.00 do you feel
this Dayton is a good match for the AudioEngine A2's? Another thing I was entertaining is buying the Audioengine P4's which are passive, and powering them with a small amp. I guess I would then run the amp out to the speaker inputs on the Dayton sub, then the outputs back to the Audioengine P4's, Correct? Which way would you guys go the Active A2's or the Passive P4's. I do know the AudioEngine speakers are getting very good reviews, and I am on a limited budget. Thanks. By the way the A2's have a mini jack input, and RCA inputs, but if you use one or the other as an input, the other input acts as an output allowing me to go to the Dayton's RCA input. Isn't this better than using an amps speaker output's? Like I said I'm pretty new to this sub thing.

"high quality sound" and "Dayton subwoofer" are antonyms I'm afraid (could a powered subwoofer that costs a mere $89 really be anything but?). I have a SUB 1200 for review now, and while it does pretty good for HT it's not very adapt with music. If you want something that can adroitly handle music you'll need to spend quite a bit more than that. Something along the lines of the SB-1000, for example.

I think this is a good sub for music and Jman reviewed it(Whether the songs were bass heavy to begin with, or focused more on the upper bass region, this sub played them with clarity and accuracy. I don't think the PS10 could necessarily be classified as "musical", but I believe for a budget subwoofer it did very well with music reproduction. Yet another time I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard.): PS10 10" High Powered Premium Home Theater Subwoofer
I love mine. :D
