Need advice - sub for a 10,000 cubic foot room

My wife and I are having a home built with a massive great room (living room, kitchen with tall ceilings) Doing the math, I come up with around 10,000 cubic feet, mostly due to the tall 20' ceiling. The sub will be hidden behind the 42 inch plasma tv in the corner, above the gas fireplace. The Problem is that I am on a budget, but still want to fill the room with deep, quality bass.

My budget is around $700+-, which really limits what I could do. I was planning on a HSU VTF-3 MK2, but have become doubtful that will be enough for this large room. SVS recommends no less than a PB12–Plus/2. SVS stated that the PB12–ISD/2 may work, but will not provide reference level sound.

My question is, does anyone have exerience with a PB12–ISD/2 in a huge room? Als, Can anyone recommend a good sub in this price range that can fill this room?

Ummmm, I'm not touching that with a 10000 cubic foot subwoofer pole

Seriously though, I think you'd be better off waiting and increasing your budget.

That's one HELL of a room to fill with bass, and you will need 2 MONSTER subwoofers MINIMUM.

Wait and save $

Couldn't agree more with Sheep. $700 isn't going to cut it for a room that large.

I love my Velodyne DD-15 and would get the job done, although I'd go for the DD-18 in your room. Only $4300 to go!

buy the plus/2 or an Axiom EP600 and go from there. to have A sub is better than NO sub
(if your budget is insufficient for the above 2, get the ISD/2)

note: I believe hidog1 had a big room (forgot how big, 6000 or so?) and he was satisfied with the ep600

I don't know if I agree. While having anything will be better than nothing, it could just be a waste. SVS said the ISD/2 is not going to fulfill his needs, so he might be better off waiting.

I just don't want him to waste time like me ... always saving JUST A LITTLE MORE for something better, when I could have been enjoying a "lowly" CHT12-R for half a year now. take note I had an HTIB JBL sub (= no sub) so I would be easily impressed.

Well, I think the bigger problem is figuring out how to fit a decent subwoofer behind the 42" plasma. Not only is it unlikely a subwoofer will "hide" behind the TV, the placement is probably wrong.

Better bet is to buy a pair of the huge SVS subs that can act as end-tables and hide them that way.

subs arent going to work too well as end tables if you actually use them. unless you feel like gluing everything down

I'd say get one good sub, along the lines of the HSU VTF-3 HO or the SVS Plus/2 and a few bass shakers to give you the rest of the tactile response. Good response is going to be tough in a room that large.

Well, I didn't say you should actually put something on the end tables. :)

Thanks all for your inputs so far. As far as placement is concerned, the 42" plasma will go in the corner above the gas fireplace. The fireplace is built into the corner, and there is alot of room for the tv, a big sub, receiver etc

This brings up another question. Will having the tv, receiver, dvd player close to a monster sub cause vibration damage to them? If so, how far away will they need to be?

They will be fine. Its just, the SVS sub is HUGE. Get out your measuring tape and see how it will fit. :)

That $700 budget will get you a lot further if you go DIY. An Ascendant Audio Alliance 18" in a Sonotube or MDF enclosure along with a decent amp would be a true MONSTER sub. :)
+1!! a 15" or 18" in a custom MDF enclosure should do it

$399 for the sub and $299 for 500w sub amp = $700 (plus the stuff to make the box)

I second the 1 big sub + bass shakers option. Due the limited placement options for the sub, the bigger it is and lower it plays, the more room mode issues you will have. The bass shakers like those from buttkicker will make up the difference by providing the "feel" to go with the LFE audio.

an infinite baffle sub would work for a room that size. and since it's a DIY you could also stay in budget.

Vann's has the Mirage S12 back in stock for $399 delivered. 2 of them might do the trick for you.
