So, my question is as the title suggests. I have toshiba speakers that went to the head unit that were recalled a few years back. Apparently they catch on fire. From what i understand the reciever was 600 watts. I dont necessarily need a dvd player/reciever. I just want something to power my speakers and have at least one optical in. The speakers are as follows- 5 satellite speakers that are 180 watts a piece at 8 ohms & one Sub that is 300 Watts & 4 ohms. Ive been searching for quite a while and have found nothing. So any suggestions on what to get would be great, thanks.

Oops, messed up the title, but you get the idea.

Was that sub powered by the head unit, or is the sub passive?

More details on those Toshiba speakers would be helpful, as well as pictures.

What was the age of that unit?

I have a strong feeling you had some sort of outdated HTIB, that will not be economically re powered and that you be better off starting from scratch.
If the sub is passive powered, as I suspect, then the whole works needs ditching.

As TLS guy stated, depending on your budget you may want to start from scratch. If the subwoofer was powered by head unit you will need to get a new subwoofer regardless, they typically didn't put a passive subwoofer with front left/right inputs outputs so you could use them with standard receivers.

O rite. I forgot. The sub is passive. Im just looking for the cheapest i can get, as long as it meets the specs above. Im sure theres got to be something that will work. Soon as i get 5 posts il post a link to the system and original specs.

OK, HERE is a link to what the receiver used to be. But it had fire problems. So i just need a receiver to match this one, or just something that will work. And have at least a digital in. I am very tired of using my altec lansing speakers in my room:(

There is no such animal, sorry. Your request is impossible to fulfill. You will need a receiver and a new active sub at the minimum. Toshiba are not know for speakers, so personally I would advise you to start from scratch.

There are threads ad nauseam on these forums to guide you on a modern receiver and active subs. You pays your money and takes your choice.

Best Buy carries a Insignia 5.1 speaker system that is now on sale for $99, it's subwoofer is self powered and compatible with any standard receiver in the market. The speakers are all 2 way w/ binding post terminals. The subwoofer is an 8" ported design, it's not perfect, but better than what you would expect in fit, finish, and sound quality for this price range. I've personally demo'd the set up and is beyond satisfactory at that price, and a real bargain for someone with a tight budget.

Best Buy also sells a Pioneer VSX-519 5.1 receiver with digital inputs as well as HDMI (audio support over HDMI) for $209 which matches the Insignia 5.1 speaker package aesthetically and would be a great combination.

So for under $350 after tax you can get better sound than most HTIAB systems, and a fully functional receiver that doesn't suffer from the usual limitations of a HTIAB system. You can always get better speakers with that receiver down the road when the budget allows, but with HTIAB systems you can't. Connectivity on HTIAB systems is often limited as well.

Yah, ive looked at a lot of stuff. I know quite a bit about like live sound stuff, but only a little on home sound. I almost got a jvc 5.1 system from target. But all the reviews said it was too quiet. Honestly, i just wanted a 5.1 system so if i watch a sound on my macbook pro i can use my optical out to get surround sound from a movie. It would also be nice for listening to music whilst doing papers. Sigh, well looks like ill be trying to sell what i have and finding a cheap yet decent 5.1 system

Don't despair, we all learn from our mistakes, and things can only get better from there. :)

True, only after i bought them did the seller say that the sub was passive. I bought my dad a pretty sweet sony system a few years back, guess i should have grabbed one while i was at it. And while i still had my money making job before my university days.

I firmly believe that once you step away from those home theater in a box systems and get some more serious gear you are going to forget all about the "sound" of the HTIAB.:)

^ I believe that too, unless it is a high end HTIB system. :)

Also, I'll try to stay away from some less than recommendable brands, and stick with the most reputable ones. From the Japanese side, I call them the big five: Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Yamaha, and Pioneer.

Two HTIB systems that truly rocks!

What's a high end htiab?
Ahhh... I knew it! I knew that you were going to ask that! ;)

You asked, you shall be answered. :)

1. @ http://www.hometheatermag.com/hometheaterinabox/onkyo_ht-s9100thx_integrated_system/

And 2. @ http://www.hometheatermag.com/hometheaterinabox/1008panahtib/

So, these two HTIB are what, for me, is a very good sound from the full package.
They can compete with many midrange receivers.
And I know for a fact, as I listened to them both at my audio dealers.
And they simply sound fabulous, with surprising amount of clean power.
You'd be very surprised Seth=L, trust me.

Wish you a great evening my friend, :)

Well, i know no matter what kind if system i eventually get ill probably have some reservations about it. Right now im just trying to get mid quality sound in a dorm size room. I run sound and use a few music programs on my computer. I occasionally mix music as well. So i dont worry about theater systems, because i know that home systems sound "good" but they dont sound "correct". I have a good handle on live music, but i know im pretty novice on home sound. So I will try to stay blissfully ignorant with cheap htiab until i can afford one of the "big boy" systems.

I was thinking of something. In live sound, stuff such as Bose is considered "overpriced trash", Idk if it is like that in home sound.
