Need advice on home stereo system with PA speakers

First off, I am new here but I am excited about the huge amount of knowledge that is here.

I was recently given two slightly older Peavey PA speaker towers. They are Peavey SP 4X speakers with 2000w max power. I would really like to use them in creating a home stereo/theater system with them. I know that I need to get a single 2x amp or two individual amps for the speakers. I am pretty sure I will need to get a receiver also.

I am needing advice or recommendations because as of right now all I have are the two speaker towers and a projector that we currently use to watch movies (that are not linked or tied in together.

Thanks in advance for help on this.

Your speakers are very high sensitivity and nowhere near 1000W would be needed to achieve deafening sound pressure levels (spl),but need an active crossover for transition from the low frequency to high frequency drivers (try this spl calculator to see how that works). Most avrs (audio video receivers) do not provide such an active crossover (the Onkyo 818 is the only one I can think of that had such a feature),but you can use something like a miniDSP 2x4 to provide such with the right avr (using pre-outs and external amps) or a pre-pro (pre-amp/processor) and external amps. You'd need at least four channels of amplification for the two speakers, and for whatever other speakers you eventually utilize. What's your budget for electronics? I'd say you also need a sub as that low frequency section doesn't dig very low (only 55hz),especially for movies but even for music.

PS Welcome to the forums!

McLovin: I briefly glanced the spec doc (and I feel that is sufficient to claim to be an expert ;):p) and I think that running active x-over or real Bi-Amping is optional and not required. Spec sheets mention few times running this full-range. OP should also note the numbers for harmonic distortion at 1% power, there is 2nd harmonic at 100hz of 2.4% - you will definitely hear this.
McLovin is correct, you'd need sub which could catch up with these speakers and it aint going to be cheap: http://jtrspeakers.com/captivator-118ht.html

Thank you both for the advice. I am sure as I try to digest all of this it will give me a much better idea about what I need. It was asked what kind of budget I have...it is somewhat limited currently...so I will have to do things in phases. I am sure I will get a sub as I love techno (EDM) music and want the music to sound proportional.

As I have questions, don't be surprised to see me ask them.

Budget is key as well as your goals. Sorry for the misdirection on the active crossover requirement....I blame my phone :)

You may be able to purchase a 2nd hand PA sub, try to look for bass extension at least down to 30hz, preferably 20hz, but it's not realistic with PA subs, maybe something from pro-cinema models. Not my really my area of expertise.
