Hi all,

I was about to order SVS SBS-01s and then I took some measurments.. the front speakers will be to big coming off my stairs... depth is the issue I can manage probably <8" from wall when mounted..

On-walls with only 8" depth may be hard to find. My Klipsch SS.5 surrounds are about as small as I could find but are 6" deep. You might want to consider in-walls. Most of the major speaker companies make them.

If you do a search here for on-walls you will find that I did a lot of auditioning of the popular choices; and have posted my thoughts and recommendations many times, so I won't do it again; just search here. But, here is two that took the price for me, in the $350.00/ea. range:

+ Monitor Audio R225

+ Paradigm Cinema Series 330

If you want less expensive and still very good try MA's R180, and Paradigm Cinema 220.

Both are excellent, and any make a good buy. Just depends on your listening preference. The MA R225 is more "musical", typical laid back English sound from MA, while the 330 is more dynamic and forward, which I liked a lot for movies; the 330 is your typical Canadian speaker, very detailed and dynamic.

Go out audition both, and see which one suits you best.

I've got the Paradigm Cinema 220 with Cinema 110 surrounds in my bedroom system. The biggest issue with them, as with most small on-walls, is that they lack bass extension to blend with an 80Hz crossover. You will need to run the crossover around 100-120Hz to get full range. This is an issue that you will have to consider no matter which on-wall you choose.

Having addressed that, I think the Cinema are one of the better sounding on-walls for their price.

Didn't mention this on my post, but Dave is 100% right. You will need a sub, and will need to play with setting for awhile. Highly recommend using your receiver's setup mic, or if you don't have that feature, get an SPL meter and set the system.

Told you there is no need to look any further than Paradigm's Cinema Series or MA Radius Series.

I got a chance to listen to the Dali Mentor LCR and was very impressed with their sound given they are on-walls. They are a bit pricey though at around $1000 each.

Ouch, that's steep! They better be damn good!

I'm willing to accept the compromises of the Cinemas a) in order to hang them on the wall and b) because the whole five speaker setup I have cost less than half the price of my pair of bookshelf mains in my primary system. The Cinemas cannot be mistaken for anything but a budget speaker with the aforementioned limitations. Like I said, one of the better on-walls for their price, which should also include a fair discount from their MSRP.

If the budget can afford a little more sound quality, I'll give you something else to look into. The Era PL Series. I say something to look into because I haven't had the opportunity to hear them for myself, but I have heard most of the rest of the Era lineup and given that experience, I would venture that these are worth investigating, at the very least (if you can find a dealer that carries them). If you can't find a dealer, Era will most likely give you the opportunity of an in-home demo if you contact them directly.
