Need advice configuring Yamaha Aventage RX-A1060

I need help configuring my new Yamaha Aventage RX-A1060 receiver. I'm not getting the same depth of sound I had with my former receiver.

Current configuration:
Standard 5.1 setup
Receiver: Yamaha Aventage RX-A1060
Speakers:
  • Front =Klipsch RF-64
  • Center = Klipsch RC-64
  • Rear = Klipsch RS-62
  • SW = Velodyne DD-15
The front speakers have the terminals connected with the jumper straps.

I tried to read the Yamaha instructions and follow the on-screen setup instructions, but the fullness and sound seems "flat". Another way to describe it may be like the "volume regulation" features you find on some TVs for night mode that prevent the sound from going over a certain dB. However, I can still increase the volume. The instructions and on-screen don't have a good example of which configuration wiring setup to use for a simple 5.1 configuration. The closest was a 7.1 or a 5.1 Bi-Amp option. I selected the 5.1 BiAmp, but I only have my front speakers wired to the front left and right connections. I am not using the front presence connections.

When running the YPAO it automatically configures my system to use Large Speakers. However, with large speakers I could not set my subwoofer crossover. So I manually changed the speaker setup to small speakers and set the crossover to 100 Hz to match the setting on my SW.

In some normal TV playback scenarios the volume and sound seems fine. However, in many other scenarios (like just listing to stereo music) the overall system just sounds somewhat muted. It makes me wonder if the selections, especially for stereo sound (2.1 music), are being under powered because I'm not wired to my speakers in a way that the receiver expects (i.e. the 5.1 Biamp without actually wiring to the front presence), or there is some other setting that I missed in the original setup.

Note that what I was using before was a Sony ES STR-DA5300ES 7.1 receiver in a 5.1 setup. The sound was always great and full and never seemed to strain even if I cranked the system. The Sony was slightly more powerful than the new Yamaha. However, the volume settings between both the Sony and Yamaha seem to be about the same dBs, but the Yamaha seems "weak".

Does anyone have any advice on what general receiver speaker settings (configuration, small vs large speakers, etc...) I should be using for this receiver setup for just a plain 5.1 setup?

I can remove the jumper straps on my front speakers and try to bi-wire it, but since I have never done that before I'm not confident on my wiring and I never had to do that with my Sony setup. This is my first time using Yamaha, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

In the Yamaha menu, set all speakers to small and set the sub crossover to 80hz. Make sure any dynamic range adjustments are set to 'off' or 'wide' or whatever Yamaha calls it. In other words, make sure the receiver is not limiting the dynamic range. Do not bi-wire the main speakers. Just connect the speaker wires normally to the 5 speakers and make sure they are all in phase (+ and -).

Is there any way to turn off your sub's EQ? On my subs, there is a switch where I can turn off the subs 'low pass filter'. If you can, turn it off because the receiver is doing the filtering already.

Thanks Dan. I will give this a whirl. I have the feeling the culprit is with the dynamic range control. That might explain why I can still turn the volume up but it seems to clip the range and sound clear yet "muffled" at the same time. I'll post back after playing with those settings some more.
