now i need speakers. My choices so far: quad 22L or 21L . axiom 60Ti ... studio40 or sig 2s .. tyler 7U... totem hawks... rocket 1000... this is for theatre and music. about 60% music 40 theatre. these are just the fronts. SO what would you buy or do you have any of these and like them.

I've got the 3805 with the Axiom M60ti for fronts and I'm very happy with the combo. The 3805/M60ti is a very popular choice going by the Axiom forums.

rikmeister just make sure none of the speakers you pick are 4 ohm.

I would recommend that you check out the Phase Technology PC 9.1 floorstanders. I demo'd these speakers and wrote a review in the review section of the forum. They have great bass extension and slam, as well as smooooooth mids and highs. And real wood veneer. They're $2k/pair. Find a local dealer and get a listen going.

the quads are 6ohm but it says that a denon 3805 has no trouble powering them.

thanks i will read your review. it is hard to listen to some of them. no dealers close and some are direct and it can be costly shipping speakers back although buying he wrong ones is even more costly.

I also just Upgraded to a Denon AVR-3805 and some Paradigm Monitors, sound excellent.

My personal choices would be to start with the Quads, then the rockets, then the axioms. I have never heard the totems, though I hear excellent things about them. Unlike most people I find the Denon a little on the bright side, so that's why I mentioned the rockets and then the axioms. the rockets tend to be more smooth with slightly rolled off highs.

You are really on an excellent quest, enjoy the trip as much as the final destination!

I have the 3805 powering Phase Tech V-12's and they are awesome. Not as good as the PC 9.1 stuff but nice none the less.

Rik,

Sorry for the delay here. What type of music do you listen to? How about HT -what percentage of time is devoted to each? Finally, are there size constraints on the speakers themselves?

I goofed on my recommendation. I should've recommended the Phase Tech PC3.1 speakers. They're 6 ohm (not 4ohm like the towers) and are big bookshelves. They're $1200/pr. Here's a pic:

Don't like them?

I'd say also have a listen to the Ascend Acoustics CMT-340.

That's a huge room. I'd be looking for some 8 ohm floorstanders (not 6) with a higher spl - say 91dB and up. If you don't, you'll need a two channel amp to power your mains. I'd also consider floorstanders with at least two 8" or larger woofers. It's going to be difficult to get bass from anything less, especially depending on which sub you integrate.

Alternative

I may be the only guy on this forum to do so, but I really like Klipsch Reference Series speakers. They are very well balanced and pretty efficient and are very well-built. I use RB-35s for the front, RB-25s for the rears, an RC-25 for the center channel and a RSW-12 for the sub (I need to confirm that is the correct one, but I believe it is). The sub is especially great and I can't say enough good things about it. The RB-35s come with 8" subs and that is on a good size bookshelf speaker. It gets loud easily but never distorts (I haven't had the courage to turn it loud enough to the point that it would do so). I'm using a Yamaha RX-V 1500 with it and it is a great combination so far. There is plenty of info on these speakers at their web-site. I bought them because they are good for both music and home theater. I can't tell you how well surround sound is reproduced on these things! You'll be watching all your old movies again because you catch so many details that you never heard before.

I'm with ya, heard the RB-35 at ultimate electronics last week and really liked the sound, decent amount of bass and was extremely clear, but I like the RF-25's even more

Yeah, the RFs are fantastic! I agreed to use bookshelf speakers for upstairs so that I can use the floors for the downstairs theater when we finish the basement. Oh, and I did put the wrong sub down, it is actually the RW-12.

Have you auditioned any B&W's like the 600 series?FWIW if you plan on auditioning Dynaudio,as great as they are they are 4ohm speakers and with the size of your room that denon is not going to cut it without a hefty amp.
I'm in full agreement with Buckeyefan 1.
