I have just finished configuring/purchacing my home theater speakers.
This is my home theater speaker setup.....
2 Large Floorstanding KLH speakers frnt lft /rht - $200.00
1 Klipsch Center Speaker - $350.00
2 rear lft/rht BOSE acustimass + module - $399.00
total ___________
$950.00

Now this is on speakers alone, not including wires, cables, etc..

So after spending close to 1000.00 on speakers, I would like to get the most out of them. I am currently using an antique Sony A/V Reciver that says it was copyrighted in 1993......... I never upgraded because it never broke down.

This is what its called on the manual

SONY FM Stero/FM-Am
Receiver
STR-D1011S

My speakers sound preaty good through ths receiver.......... but I cant help wondering if they could sound better if I used a newer A/V receiver..........

Speaker and connection options

Xabe,
I also think you sould reconsider some of your speaker selections. There are some great options in your budget. Also keep in mind that the speakers are the most important component of your audio system and the Mains (and center) are the most important speakers, as opposed to the surround channels.

Check out this Onix X-LS 5.1 system for under your current budget:
http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=83.1
If you want floorstanders, they will have the X-sls model out soon for $300/pair. You could buy a 3.1 system with bookshelf, center, and sub now, and add the floorstanders when they come out.

Also note, there are ways to hook up a sub to your current receiver. Some subs, including the Onix X-sub, have speaker level inputs and don't need to use digital coax type connection.

For reasonalbe performance, make sure that your receiver will decode Dolby Digital and DTS signals from a DVD player. Also, a receiver in the $300 range would be a good next upgrade.

yea, i should have purchaced my speakers from the same company in the first place i guess. im not sure what to do with my speakers then. sell them 1 by 1 on ebay? i doubt i'd get my money back. i also saw a few speaker kits at costco the other day. they looked preaty nice and were only about $400-$500. and they were made by yamaha, sony, phillips, and some other brand names. the speakers looked preaty slim, would they have enough bass? thnx

Speakers

Most big box stores have a 30-day return policy, so you may still have time.
I would not recommend the HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) type speakers at Costco, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. Companies like Sony, Yamaha, and Pioneer are electronics manufacturers and are not know for their speakers. Also, small satelite speakers with 3-4" woofers are not capable of producing the mid and bass frequency ranges.

Start checking out some speakers at local B&M dealers like Paradigm, Klipsch, PSB, etc. In your budget, internet direct companies like AV123.com, Axiom Audio, and Ascend are also good options. Reviews on this and other sites are also a good place to start.

im not sure how i can configure my speakers. the speakers are way past their return date....... so returning them isnt an option. should i upgrade my AV receiver? i really want an AV reciver that is able to adjust the sound *loundness* going into each speaker. because my AV receiver right now is able to do that. i am able to adjust how loud my rear speakers are and how loud my center speaker is.
