Hey all I have been super busy doing new things recently and have not been very active here of late. I am looking for the best speaker set up Front 3 and Sub for a huge open 30 x 24 room with open to kitchen and dining room walls. My buddy wants to fill the room( I thought about Warp right away LOL) and wanted to direct him to the best bet for a front 3 setup.I think he wants duel epiks or or JL's. Thanks in advance..........Jamie

Powered JTR subs would be well over that budget, but passive ones should work. Of course, he'd need to have his own amps & EQ. I'd also look at the Seaton Submersive HP but that would be somewhat over 4k for a pair as well.

This video makes me smile every time :D

I know an authorized dealer that can get a pair of the Revel F52 towers + the Revel C52 Center for $6K shipped.

Is WAF a factor here....?

Why don't you guys make this into a project.... buy the speakers, whatever they end up being, and then Build the Subs...

Just don't go sealed... ported or passive radiator

I like granteed's FW suggestion....
You could build 2 of those with LMS drivers instead of the pro drivers for $4K with amps.... Should more then suffice for the room that size, which is what I should have done.... ;)

I would suggest this design though personally...

He could go with two of the captivators with the 1000w plate amps for around $4k.

Yeah, the Captivator 1000 is definitely worth considering, but if I had the money I'd just get the regular passive caps and buy a couple EP4000s or whatever.

With out knowing what we are going to use for power I'm thinking high efficiency... Other than what has already been suggested Klipsch Reference are worth a listen. Not everyone's cup of tea but... I like the Epik Empire sub. Rick has one and it kicks. His room is smaller than your friends though. Four of them could do it... I'd call them to see what they say.

Happy hunting!:)

That's a lot better :D

Well, around two Funkywaves F15.3 would be about what i'd be looking at for subs with that budget. - and factor in some way to integrate and EQ - like this SVS Audyssey unit or at least a MiniDSP.

As long as he's got two, three or four great subs that can be crossed high, properly set up in the room, with that budget, I'd be looking at three Gedlee Abbeys (or two Summa and an Abbey Centre). Not only will they play exceedingly loud with low distortion, but should have a wide sweet spot, high detail, neutral voicing and tight imaging and no "horn" sound. You may want to cross over around 100hz though as they are one of the few speakers out there that are sealed, so they have a 12db/octave and are around 3-4db down near 100hz. They do roll off the top octave a bit with a -3db point around 18khz though.

And, if he wants, he can budget in the following...

-ceiling diffusion at first reflection points
-2" of absorption to shove under a rug at first reflection points
-some bass trapping along corners
-back wall diffusion to improve surround spaciousness

But that's mostly extra... These narrow but constant directivity Geddes speakers are designed for use in live rooms with no treatments along side wall... they are "self treating" at FR points and with the later reflections along those bare walls are supposed to improve the sound stage. Geddes recommends plenty of toe-in for best performance.

Most half decent receivers should drive these high sensitivity, high impedance speakers to high levels with ease, but if he wants to add separates amps, I'd be looking at Emotiva, Outlaw, ATI B-stock, used Denon PoA, and Used Parasound, - I do know Dr. Geddes' audition system used something like a 90 watt, 200 dollar pioneer receiver with constantly overheating chip amps and people supposedly leave that system amazed at the output.

Actually I'd be looking at some DIY Hypex Ucd700s... the dynamics and efficiency would be scary :D

Alternatively - while you won't have the dynamics of the high sensitivity 12" / 15" midwoofers or the constant directivity down to 1khz, i'd be looking at the Pioneer EX speakers - 2x S-3EX and 1x S-8EX (or S-1EX/S-7EX if a dealer can squeeze these step up models into the budget) - and feed them with some healthy 140+wpc amps.

Also alternatively, the Revel F52s recommended by AcuDefTechGuy should royally kick *** too. Again with the amps.

Also also alternatively, I would consider a pair of Salk HT2-TLs with a Salk V3 Monster Center and plenty of diffusion panels around the room :D - again with the amps.

Those things RMK and MidnightSensi use. ;)
Haha....yes, both rmk and I raised our hands and were like 'welp, we've found it'

I think in that price range JTR is the way to go. It's excellent sound quality, huge spl, and a good price all in one. Also an added benefit of field upgradability.

I really like my Danley CS30s for subs (how can you not love subwoofers that remove tiles off the bathroom in the adjacent room?), but I've heard awesome things about the JTRs. I heard the prosound Growlers and they filled a warehouse mid-field effortlessly.

If I was in the market for subs now I'd likely get a pair of Orbit Shifters. Actually might do it even though I'm not in the market. haha.

How about something from Meyer, TAD or EAW? They ought to fill the rooms.
