NEC and Sony Merger for Optical Storage Business

The deal is said to have been finalized last Monday. In the agreement Sony will control 55% of the business while NEC controls 45%. Sony and NEC’s new optical storage operations have been dubbed “Sony NEC Optiarc INC” and will commence at the start of April. If Sony’s upper hand at 55% in this deal is any indication of NEC’s ability to support HD DVD in the long term, it doesn’t look good for Toshiba.

That's too bad. NEC makes great optical drives. With Sony in control I won't be buying anymore. It's all Plextor now.

wow, I'm surprised to hear of this. I hope the quality of the NEC DVD burners doesn't deteriorate now that they are merged with Sony.

The Sony drives are actually manufactured by Lite-On. Lite-On makes good burners and the Lite-On branded drives have always been a much better deal than the Sony ones.
