I Purchased an avr335 and the manual is piss poor in explaining the bass management. I'd like to know what the difference is in 'speaker setup--->subwoofer' between LFE and left/right-LFE. Does 'left/right-LFE send the LFE channel to main speakers also? Confusion is setting in....

LFE means on a 5.1 track (or if you're doing surround processing on a stereo signal), means the sub will only produce bass designated for the sub (in the .1 track, or by the surround processor).

LFE+RIGHT/LEFT means that in addition to the bass to be produced by the subwoofer track in surround, it will also produce the bass signals that are going to your front R/L speakers in addition.

This is beneficial to someone who doesn't have large mains or for someone who wants an extra kick in the pants.

Since bass produced by the sub is (for the most part) non-directional, it's not an issue having the sub also produce bass from the R/L. :)

Hope this helped.

I'm sorry that I didn't explain further but that option (lfe+l/r) can only be set if I set my mains to 'large'. What exactly are they trying to get at in the instructions?
The whole bass management setup instructions in this booklet sucks.

I'm sure the instructions aren't that clear but bass management is standardized and all receivers offer roughly the same features. The feature you mention is offered by other brands using a different name; ie 'Double Bass', 'LFE+MAIN', 'Plus', etc.

If a channel is set to Large, it gets a full range signal and thus no part of the signal is redirected to the sub. In contrast, when a channel is set to Small, the bass below the xover frequency you set is redirected to the sub. So this LFE/Left+Right feature would only be available when you set the front speakers to Large. As WndrBr3d explained, if you use that setting the front speakers will get a full range signal (because they are set to Large) AND the sub will get frequencies below the xover from those channels as well.

That is why it is called double bass - the Large speakers and the sub will be playing the bass frequencies. It is confusing when they label the feature LFE/Left+Right or LFE+MAIN because LFE always goes to the sub if you indicate that a subwoofer exists. It is the non-LFE bass (frequencies below the xover frequency) that are duplicated and played by the sub in addition to the Large speakers.

like it was stated earlier,

the setting with lfe alone means it will play the track that is designated on the dvd for the subwoofer only.

sometimes dvd's or whatever dont have that designated sub channel and your sub will just be silent, so you have to switch and include left and right, which means they grab bass from the low end that is being sent to the front mains.

you need to set your speakers to large because if they are set to small, there is no low end being sent to the mains.

I have another question than about the x-over setup in the HK receiver. Under 'LFE' section in the x-over menu you have 4 options, l/r speakers, center, surrounds, back surrounds. Is this where you would set the 'LFE' low pass filter to one of this channels? Just say I have the speakers setup as follows for the x-overs - l/r = 40hz, center =60hz, surrounds =40hz, back surrounds(I don't use) =100hz.... than I set 'LFE' to center. Will that set a low pass filter to the center channel and than send it to the sub (for LFE channel)?

So if I play a dvd with a dolby digital source with LFE, the LFE bass will also be sent to the fronts?

No, as MDS stated, if you have a sub in the system then the LFE/.1 channel bass will only go to the sub(the only way to get it to go to the mains is to tell your receiver that you don't have a subwoofer)

The 'left/right-LFE' will only operate for those speakers set to LARGE and will send the bass that is going to those speakers set to LARGE to the sub also. The subwoofers LFE/.1 channel bass will stay with the sub and not be sent to any other speaker(unless you tell your receiver you don't have a sub)

cheers:)
