Ok kids, I've been trying to think of the name of a book I read in high school, but for the life of me, I can't come up with it. It's been a while, but the vague description I have of the story is this:

It is fiction, placed some time in the future, and all technology has either been abolished, or something happened where the way we live today has disappeared and people have been living as they would several hundred years ago (pre-Industrial revolution). I think the main character was female, and there was something to do with the government covering up why there was this sudden rollback of technology. I also recall a scene where she was working in a field and they were talking about a pregnant woman having a baby right there in the field.

There may also have been instances where the language had been altered, so that they were speaking English, but there were some oddball variations (Think the way they spoke in The Village movie).

This is really all I can remember, but I'm interested in looking the book up again. I've tried some random Google searches, but I guess my detective skills fail me. Anyway, any help would be appreciated!

Good hunting. :D

Sounds like Peter Dickinson books: The Watermonger, Heartsease and The Devil's Children. They are written in that order, but chronologically go in reverse order.

There was a British TV show also based off the books, called "The Changes."

Good stuff.

It almost sounds like Ayn Rand's Anthem. It's been a long time since I read it, though. I also have a hard time believing that they would teach Ayn Rand in school.;)

Edit - I think I might know the book you're talking about. Did they pick up the character in a helicopter or something at the end of the book?

Yeah, that's the one where they can't say "I," right?

That would explain him remembering funny language, but, Peter Dickinson is British, so I was thinking that as a child he might have not recongized it as 'Queen's English' and thought it was something in the book.

This is the one. Someone on another forum I frequent posted a link to a list of Dystopian genre novels and I recognized it as soon as I saw the title.

Thanks for the help, that's cool that you actually got the name of it! Anyway, good book, I'm going to look it up again. I like oddball stories like that, where the idea could realistically happen, but is still fiction. It always makes me wonder. :)

EDIT: Here's the link to the Wiki about it, for anyone interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthem_(novel)

Did they actually teach an Ayn Rand novel in your high school or did you read it on your own when you were in high school?

Good question. Since I don't actually own the book, I'm going to lean towards required reading. It may have been the case where there was a list of book options to read for a certain assignment if not required for the whole class. I honestly can't remember. This was 10 years ago, so I'm surprised I even remembered the name when I saw it.
