Howdy-
I'm new to the forum, but I definatly like what I see here. That brings me to my reason for joining...some expert advise.

I have the opportunity to buy a Nakamichi AV-2, a Nak changer (problematic, I know), and some worn Jamo speakers for 250.00. Basically, the Nak is the reason for the purchase.

Is this receiver worth buying?

Secondly, I want to hook it up, possibly, to some La Scala's, or some ADS L710's...good match?

Third...older format for surround...combatable issue for a reasonable price?

Fourth...I like records...and there is no input.

Is the unit worth the price?

Thanks!

.....Jubba, welcome to the membership of Audioholics.com....Nakamichi is certainly a name that brought respect when the unit you are considering was produced....$250 is a drop in the bucket for a system as you surely know well, but only you can determine if the used system is worth $250 to you....if the equipment is local, I for sure would request it be hooked up and run through it's paces making sure everything works....even if everything supposedly worked fine going into a storage situation, that doesn't mean it will work fine brought from storage....determine how important phono capabilities are to you as you consider since you mentioned that....Jabba, here's the kicker.....forget the asking price....when you hear the used system set up and cranking, ask yourself if you REALLY want it....if the answer is yes, it can always go to be a second system in another room that you got dirt cheap....and keep in mind, $250 would land you 4 BIC 62's with some change left over to start in the direction of modern and new....you asked for expert advice....all I can say is others will take it from here, haha....I wish you only the best of luck in your seeking.....

nak phono amp

Well, i've decided to purchase this unit. On this unit there is no phono input. I've been looking, briefly, into phono amps...can anyone tell me exactly how this works? Secondly, is it necessary to buy an expensive unit to do so, or can I get by with one of the cheap pyle units?

Next, what options might I have as far as updating the surround processing capacity on this unit - on an affordable basis?

Thank you!

A phono preamp converts the very weak signal from the tonearm of your turntable into a standard line-level signal. It also applies and EQ curve to output flat response (When records are cut, the sound is EQ'd due to the properties of the vinyl medium). You can pick up inexpensive phono preamps from places like Parts Express, though I have no idea how good they are. You might be able to find something reasonably priced on AudiogoN as well.
