A new TV, speakers, A/V receiver, or subwoofer might be the most exciting pieces of equipment to purchase for a home theater, but there are a plethora of accessories that are truly needed in order to complete a system. From HDMI cables and speaker wire to surge protection, it can be difficult to sift through all of the different products and figure out what to buy. Well, we have done the leg work for you. We used to do it a lot - right within our other buying guides... which made us think: Shouldn't we split out the necessities into their own guide? Now we have. This article guides you through everything you will need to get your system up and running properly.

I would like at add - to the remote area - a thumb's up for Harmony's Hub. It uses you iphone, ipad, or ipod touch etc. to control the "hub" that then send IR - or direct cabling - to your equipment.

It ends up being a lot cheaper that a full touch screen unit (even if you need to buy a second-hand touch off craig's list) and I like it a lot better than other harmony touch screen units because the 'app' allows the feeding of your programming schedule.

Thanks for the reco on the Disney Wow disc, I've been wondering if there was a good one to recommend that is beginner friendly.

One item everyone should have a SPL Db hand held meter. I have a old Rat Shack with the VU meter that still works great. The chart that came with it shows how long you can listen to music before you damage your hearing. I get carried away with the volume on some Bluray HD special effects so my wife checks the sound level from time to time so I don't hurt our ears any more then what 45 years of music and loud motorcycles have done :)
