From the humble little audio company HSU Research, located in Anaheim, CA, comes a new addition, the VTF-1 mk3 subwoofer. This is the latest version of their VTF-1 model with a higher powered amp, slightly larger enclosure and a front-firing orientation. Although it is now their lowest price of the bunch (5 subwoofers in total), do not count this subwoofer out in the least. After all, it is an HSU. Dr. HSU hasn't been in business for 25 years for nothing.

Take a minute to read this preview and see for yourself.

From the article: "with two ports open the VTF-1 MK3 is rated at 103dB at 25Hz versus the 93.9dB of the older model at the same Hz measurement"

That is a huge improvement, more than three-fold increase in output. One thing that might have slightly contributed to that increase is that the ports are now on the same side of the cabinet as the driver, which would bring both a tad closer to the testing microphone, but that would only add a very slight amount to the measurement. I also like the response of two port mode hitting 110+ dB at 40 Hz and above, making it a great little sub for music.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the VTF-2 MK5 for my living room setup. $600 shipped compared to the $800 SVS PB-2000 that I almost bought today.

I think HSU is once again the leader in price/performance for under $800 subs right now.

VTF-1 is now smaller than the STF-2 was and it appears to offer more now for the $$.

And shootout it will be, but it predictably not going to end well for rls sub.

Thanks to Kevin Garcia and Audioholics for the EXCELLENT preview of the HSU VTF-1 MK3. I am already starting to sense that this subwoofer may hit the sweet spot of price and performance for my admittedly modest budget. I look forward to the full test bench review from Audioholics, which I'm hoping will include some tips for adjusting the various features offered by the VTF-1 MK3 to tailor the sub to personal listening preferences and room characteristics.

Let me also say that the aforementioned Audioholics shootout between this Hsu MK3 and the Speedwoofer 10s would be a HUGE benefit for those of us who are interested in making a purchase.

I am an "Audiophyte", so the information you provide is a welcome learning opportunity for me. Great work, guys!
