My Receiver is Out of Control! Or am I the stupid one?

Hi guys,

So ... I am using Yamaha RX-v465 receiver. Yea, I know, time to upgrade ... anyway.

After doing the Yamaha's speaker calibration or whatever it's called with the microphone, I check the setting Yamaha creates.

Front and rear speakers are set to = Large
Crossover is at 80
Bass out = Subwoofer. (here is where the problem is)

It sets bass out only from the sub and that's fine, BUT .... once I exit the settings, no bass is coming out of the sub. Only when I change BASS out = BOTH sub and speakers, I get the sub to play.

very strange.

Anyone know what's going on? Not only do I not feel the base from sub but even on the screen it shows off.

Like I said .... the only way for me to get the sub going is to have settings Sub out = BOTH (sub and speakers).

Anyone? What's happening? I think sound will be a lot better if bass was only played through Sub.

I thought that if this can;t be fixed then maybe I can manipulate this with a crossover set to 100+ ???

Why are your front and rear speakers set to Large? Set them to small.

Yamaha treats the subwoofer in a slightly odd way. When you have your speakers set to large, and bass to go to the subwoofer only the way it does the following: anything on an LFE track [from a X.1 source] will go to the subwoofer, but any bass contained in the speaker tracks will go to the speakers. When you set the bass to go to both speakers and subwoofer the bass from the speaker tracks gets routed to the subwoofer as well. I have no clue why it does this, and only figured this out via trial and error.

If, on the other hand, you set the speakers to small all bass should get rerouted to the subwoofer.

That was confusing.. but I think I get the jest and you are correct.

Speakers set to large..bass gets routed to speakers set to large..lfe ".1" track still goes to the sub
Speakers set to both speaker channels gets routed to speakers and sub still gets the lfe
Speakers set to small..all bass gets routed to the sub plus the ".1" None makes it to the speakers.

I think that is standard practice across the board and not just a Yamaha quirk.

Yeah....I could have written that better, 3db it seems you've decoded my message but I'll reword myself. For this I'll use ".1" as you did for the LFE track. For simplicity sake I'll be talking from the standpoint of a 2.1 system but anything I say about the fronts (LR) can be correlated to any other channel

Edit: Upon rereading the OP, I'd like to add a vital clarification. The Large/Small designation is the setting that you use to tell the receiver if you want the speaker to be crossed over or not. A speaker set to large receives the full spectrum while one set to small is crossed over.

I'll start with a scenario not even in contention, just for completeness.

Fronts only:

The .1 track gets routed to the front speakers in addition to the bass that was originally going to them. If your fronts are set to small, the bass goes nowhere, no speaker will play it.

Bass set to sub only:

When you have speakers set to large it assumes that you want them to handle all of the audio intended for them, and will reroute none of the bass from the LR channels to the sub. The .1 track will be routed to the sub.

Setting the front speakers to small, the receiver assumes you still want the bass played so it is routed to the subwoofer in addition to the .1 track.

Bass set to "both":

When you have the speakers set to large the bass from the LR track will be played on both the front's and the subwoofer. I assume, but have not attempted to figure out if this is true, that the .1 track is also played on both the fronts and subwoofer.

I don't believe there is any point in setting bass to both with the speakers set to small.

Hope that is a little easier to follow!

Does this happen with BD and the DTS HD signal or only on CDs and perhaps DVDs.
As explained some receivers, including some Onkyo, like mine too, needs to be set to "both" or "double bass" to get the lows to the sub from 2 ch audio.

A pain, yes, as I don't want the bass not in the .1 to go there with BD.
