Well, I broke down and ordered one of those Yamaha 2500's off of ubid last week. $508 with shipping. I got it today, guys, I'm impressed. This thing was really simple to setup, and it sounds pretty darn good. The YPAO is easy to use and it gets you pretty close (make sure the house is dead quiet). I was amazed how good my system sounded even without any tweaking. I'm not really pushing any hard load with this unit, but the bit of listening I did, the unit was very dynamic and well controlled. The remote is really nice, and has a great learning feature that enables you to perform any function of the original remote. All in all this unit is a steal for $500. I highly recommend this piece.

The new "deal of a lifetime" for 2006. Nice purchase!

Just looking at the specs. Wow, what a unit. Got to love that PEQ.

130 watts rms - each channel; 20-20,000Hz, .04% THD; 8 ohms.
190 watts rms at 4 ohms; .7% THD; 1kHz Dynamic power
34.2lbs (yep, exceeds that magic number of 33lbs. ;) )

I believe I hold deal of 2005 then due to the fact I purchased a new 2500 shipped for $549! back in 2-05! Then bought a 750 dvd, sacd, dvda, etc from same seller for $149 shipped to my door! And yes it is a nice unit.

Deal of a lifetime!

That is a great deal, I may pick one up for my second, soon to be, system. I think I actually got the deal of a lifetime last year with a new Marantz SR-8400 for $459! :D

I sure hope you don't need service on that 2500, that would be a shame as they will not honor a unit sold by ubid.

Good luck,

Pat

Me 2

Mac,

I pulled the trigger as well - $495 shipped from Ubid, arrived yesterday evening. I haven't had much time with it (about 10PM - midnight), but so far so good.

YPAO definetly did a good job improving the overall sound and the on-screen display rocks! Now I just need to figure out all of those sound modes... and get some decent speakers!

Do you modify this magic number from time to time? ;)
Or, is this really your original weight threshold:D

No modifications. It's always been >= 33lbs for me. I came up with it after researching all units a few years ago with and without THX certification (no unit went under 33lbs. and was THX certified at the time), and included those that actually put out a clean 100 watts rms into 2 channels at <.08%THD into 8 ohms at 20-20,000Hz.

There are a few exceptions now, but my rule usually holds up for the most part. The Pioneer 1015TX barely makes it at 110x2 at .09 THD, because I'm pretty sure it would do .05 THD at 100x2. The new Onkyo 703 breaks my rule, as it's just shy of 30lbs and puts out 100x2 at .08THD. It's THX Select II.
