My new WmAx speakers

Well folks, it's been a long weekend... and there were a number of bumps, but after 27 hours of driving, I finally have my new speakers.

Sadly, the DCX crossover was discovered to have a bad channel, which means two things. It means that I did not have time to listen to Chris's other gear , and it means that I can't listen to my new toys here at home until I resolve the problem.

I can certainly say that Chris is the sound-obsessive in person that he is on the boards: and his custom speakers sure looked and felt impressive. We did get my speakers runnin on his DCX, and so I did get some opportunity to hear them and I am happy that it has been time, blood, and money well spent. By far the best speakers I own, but I expceted nothing less. Truly amazing work!

I'll post pictures when I get them setup, and my impressions (if anyone cares) after I've had some time to settle in to them.

They look just like they did before. But I'll put them in place and take pics. Just ignore the Paradigms that will be standing right next to them until the DCX problem is resolved

I think buying 1 Gramma and cutting it in half might be all you need to get the tweeters up a little higher for both speakers. It really helped with the imaging on my 360's. Better yet, two Grammas. I know, I'm over here spending your money like it was water.

I'm really glad you got them home and hope you enjoy them.

I'll post the complete on and off axis response curves and waterfall(CSD) later on after I process the data files for publishing the graphs on here. The power response (off axis response) is incredibly linear, even at extreme angles, providing a near identical spectral curve for the room reflections and direct signal. Dynamics are considerable, as well, considering the quad amped active system is outputting over 2400 clean watts (1200+ watts to each stereo channel) with the 2 x 6.5 midbass units crossed at 100hz/450Hz, and the W7s under 100Hz, giving a huge amount of capability to the highest power density spectrum in music. (Over about 400-500Hz, the power distribution in music reduces by at least 50%, and again, at about 4000-5000Hz, and once again, at about 12000-15000Hz). The ribbon tweeter (Fountek) was crossed in at about 4000Hz.

I only listened for a couple of minutes with the speakers running properly (I do 99% of all design work using various test signals/measurements and correlating them to valid perceptual research), but they sounded absolutely neutral, with no hint of resonance in any manner, nor any level of audible distortion at any SPL at which they were tested. I did analyze the full distortion behavior of the drivers individually before finalizing this design.

While this will never have the potential of a high grade omnipolar system in regards to realism effect, it should be able to compete with the fidelity of virtually any monopolar system, regardless of price, within reasonable parameters (keep in mind this system's LF if about -3dB at 35Hz. 25Hz is possible, but at the expense of full scale dynamic capability. The W7 8", though an amazing driver, is limited to about 35Hz in a SEALED cabinet, if you want full scale dynamic capability comparable to a conventional high grade 12" subwoofer, and btw, a 12" conventional sub is limited to about 35Hz as well, unless dynamic capability is compromised to get more extension. Total end satisfaction will depend on equalization of the system response; I targetted a mostly flat response overall so that the end user could reliably adjust to their preference(s).

Alex, lets not forget where they originally came from...........lol. Well, before your and Chris's modifications at least. Just wished I could have gotten to hear them after being modified. The Primus speakers are very good to begin with given their respective prices. Just glad to see my former speakers are being well taken care of. Congrats to you Jerry!

I hope your Behringer gets fixed soon! Where did you buy it from? Most places will swap it out quicker than you'll get satisfaction through Behringer, in my experience.

Sadly, the Behringer was baught by Matt more than a year ago. It's doubtful I could get a warranty repair on it, but I shall see what can be done.
