Very few units have RGB these days, so I think you are talking about component video - that is the right one to use for your gear if your player doesn't have HDMI. If the plasma has HDMI though, you might consider picking up a player like the Oppo 970HD ($149) or 971H ($199) for even better picture quality (970 is a top rated player despite the price). Buying a plasma and then using a less than average DVD player is just kind of wrong.

Sounds like a pretty good setup.

DVD Player

First off, Thank you for the advice. Your right, I am using the component video. I will look into that dvd player too, thanks for the heads up on that. Only problem is I dont think my receiver is hdmi ready. Do you have any suggestions to get around this?

You don't need HDMI for a quality picture. Use your component cables as you are right now. Most can't tell a difference between component and HDMI. Use a coax digital connection for your audio from the dvd player to the receiver, as well as the 8300HD box. You can also use composite (red/white rca) cables for channels 1-99 out of the cable box, which are analog and will provide better S/N when digital sound isn't available.

I think J-Garcia was proposing the Oppo's upconversion ability when using HDMI. For Audio, he can still use the digital connection between player and a/v and set the Oppo to Bitstream for DD and DTS.

I have two aw100's and I was thinking about using them as my rear surrounds. What do you guys think? The bp2x's as my surrounds and the aw100's as my rear surrounds:confused: yeah sounds good:confused: .

ran into a little problem.

I just hooked up my new dvd player (pioneer dv-490v-s) via hdmi to my plasma, and digital coaxial audio to my receiver. Now I am able to view dvd's in at 1080i but the picture dosent look that much better and the audio sounds like poop. So I tried to hook up the audio via the L R spots and it still sounds like poop. I had my old dvd player hooked up via component and audio hooked up through L R and it sounded awesome.

Oh yeah I also hooked up my receiver to my plasma using a new cable. It starts out component from the receiver and ends in the pc input on my plasma and now my cable dosent work, it says undetectable signal.

Now I have about 5 friends and my wife watching a movie that sounds like crap, and its driving me crazy. So please help! Every time I try to fix it my wife starts nagging saying "why didnt you fix this earlier!"

In the DVD player setup, make sure to select "Bitstream" for DD and DTS Audio.

And in your TV menu, shutoff the speakers.
