Well, I had been talking to SVS about an upgrade path and I was looking at one of the cylinders, possibly a Plus because I have a fairly large room and the PB-10 always did well, but wasn't quite moving enough air for this room - 19x20, high vaulted ceiling, open to the kitchen (total is ~5K+ cf). Around the same time, I was talking to a buddy of mine who likes to build his own subs and he mentioned he was almost done with his new project, so I asked what he was doing with the old one..."I'm selling it. Why, you interested?" ....:D

Check out these numbers in my room (corrected, NO EQ):

Freq. dB
160 - 75.5
142.5 - 74.5
125 - 81.5
111 - 82
100 - 84
89 - 86.5
80 - 89.5
71 - 81.5
63 - 87.5
56 - 80.5
50 - 81.5
45 - 85
40 - 87.5
36 - 86.5
31.5 - 87
28 - 83
25 - 83
22 - 79.5
20 - 79.5
18 - 78
16 - 74.5

Calibrated from listening position. Gain is at just about 30% on the amp which means there's a LOT more available, subsonic filter set to 14Hz (sub is tuned to 17Hz). It's flatter than my PB-10 at the top, though I still have some squiggles in the 125-63 range. Overall, I'm very impressed with this guy. The first time I fired it up, with 50% gain without calibrating, I was literally startled by the output

I popped in Master & Commander because it was the first thing on hand, and all I could muster was a stupid grin and "Holy crap." The rumble from the cannons was simply jaw dropping. I tried out a number of the standards; all being quite impressive. I have not tried out Incredibles or "Darla" yet, but it should suffice to say, this one is a keeper. I do have pics, but I'll have to shrink them down to post them later. I still have the PB-10 too..............

I am concerned your PB-10 may be having some issues. I think the next course of action is for you to send me the PB-10 and let me do some extended testing. I will report back soon :D

I've been considering an SVS Plus Cylinder as well have have also been thinking about the DIY route. My room size is similiar to yours. Did your buddy build a kit or design his own? What are the details...driver, box size & type, amp etc? Was it more cost effective than a 25-31 PC-Plus?

It's a 12" Adire Audio (see sig) Tempest 12" dual voice coil 4 Ohm. It's a cylinder and I believe it was a kit. I believe it is 73 liter, single port, down firing, 48" tall, 18" diameter. I'll have to ask him where he actually ordered the parts from, but other than the port and driver, there's nothing that looks hard to get. It was definitely more cost effective than a Plus, but with the amp I bought and the config/size, it is more in-line with a 16-46PCi, so probably not the same kind of output as a Plus with 525w and that Plus driver. I picked up a 350w@ 4Ohm plate amp with continuously variable phase and selectable subsonic filter (14, 20, 28Hz).

That's pretty darn impressive with no EQ. Hope to hear it soon. Mine will be here Mon-Tues. So your null is gone or is the bass peaking outside the LP? What's the "whump" factor? Getting pushed back into the couch?

I'll bet there isn't a knat's eyelash difference in performance with the 16-46+ except headroom.

Congrats

Ron, you asked if I was getting chest thump with this guy yesterday. Nope. Most likely due to the odd shape of the ceiling, but there is definitely a lot of activation of the room, and when the low stuff hits, it really hits. Based on those readings, the null looks to be subdued or gone really. Could be because of the top firing port. Whump is definitely there; with it cranked up, it's almost violent compared to the PB-10. The interesting thing is, it seems to do it without being louder than the PB-10. I really had to dial this guy back from the PB-10's settings: -2 at the receiver and less gain on the amp. Two words: The Haunting

The best part - you can't even see it in my setup :D AND, I can cross the BFD off my x-mas list...

I am in *no way* knocking the PB-10, because it actually puts up very good numbers and sounds amazing for the price, but for the size of my room, the 10 doesn't quite move enough air. There are a few in line for it, but if those don't happen, it will be going up for sale soon.

P.S. Friday looks good, so let the Mrs know :)

So...... you don't sound gitty at all

Good stuff man, happy, yet jealous for you.

Have you played a 17.5Hz test tone yet?

That's a beast. I'm looking forward to hiding mine too because it's all about function over form. Don't be frightening the neighbor children, but I am interested in what that guy does to the knocking door in the Haunting.

BTW, I was wrong on "The Island" 4.5/5 on thebland scale at +0 ref. You know it's going to sound good.

16 and 18, no 17.5 tone :)

Ron, we'll check out "Darla" from Nemo and "creaking pipes" from The Haunting. That scene from Jin Roh (in the sewer) also had a little more oomph to it - that's got to be in the mid to low 20s for a good 3-4 minutes straight. I've got my spare copy of The Haunting DTS ES that you can borrow to try out yourself too when your sub shows up :)

I checked out a bit of the Island yesterday and the opening scene sounded pretty decent (music).

Don't forget War Of The Worlds. Scene 5. Especially when the tripod stomps.
