My front/center speaker crackle/pop during loud scenes

I have a Harman DPR1001 receiver connected to a set of Polk satalites RM6700 and PSW202 subwoofer.

Lately, I have noticed that during explosions or sudden loud noises, my front speakers start to pop loudly. I don't usually listen to my system on loud volume but I have noticed it happening more and more recently.

What could be the reason and how do I stop it. I don't know much about audio systems so I don't know how to start troubleshooting. Could it be the humidity? the cables? subwoofer?

Please help.

I could be wrong, but it might be overheating...

More information

I don't think so. This Harman reciever is digital so it doesn't heat up at all. And like I said, it only happens when I am watching movies and there is a particularly loud/sudden noise.

I have been reading other posts with similar but not exactly the same problem. And I am wondering if it might help to trim the speaker cables. Could it be corrosion in the tips or would that affect the sound continuously? I am trying to get suggestions to be able to troubleshoot knowledgeably.

I could be that your ground connections inside of your receiver is loose. I had a similar situation with my Yamaha RX-V620, and that was my problem.

Does it happen at lower volumes?

It sounds kinda like your speakers (or amp) are being driven beyond their limits.

It is not the speaker cable.
Loud, sudden noise/ signal ;) is an indication of driver overload where th econe is reaching its mechanical limit of throw. It is quick, so it is a short click.
As Mark asked, what happens when you lower the volume?

Another vote here for over driving the woofers, causing them to "bottom out". It often sounds like a clack! or Pop! noise.

You have melted the voice coil and has separated from the magnet. The popping sound is the separation at its furthest point. It sounds like you blew the speakers with too much distortion.
